Sir Frederic Madden - LoveToKnow 1911
SIR FREDERIC MADDEN (1801-1873), English palaeographer, the son of an officer of Irish extraction, was born at Portsmouth on the 16th of February 1801.
Madden was perhaps the first palaeographer of his day.
He was an acute as well as a laborious antiquary, but his ignorance of German prevented his ranking high as a philologist, although he paid much attention to the early dialectical forms of French and English.

The year Madden met him, Conybeare delivered the Bampton lectures at Oxford and published a volume on the interpretation of Scripture; at about the same time he was publishing fairly widely on chemistry and geology; and he had earned a reputation for scrupulously attending to his clerical duties in Bath Easton.
For Madden's collations to be of any value, it is of course necessary to distinguish between his copy of Conybeare's notes and his own independent observations of the state of the manuscript.
Madden's gloating at Conybeare's expense seems particularly unseemly, in view of the special access he was given to Conybeare's copy of Thorkelin and to the uncorrected proof sheets of his Illustrations of Anglo-Saxon Poetry.

Under the guidance of the great keeper of manuscripts at the British Museum, Sir Frederic Madden, much of the Cotton Library, including this manuscript, was painstakingly conserved in the nineteenth century using what were then the most up-to-date techniques.
Madden's work on the Cotton manuscripts included the careful and accurate collation of two sets of previous transcripts of the Beowulf manuscript, which is now part of the digitised package.
The nineteenth-century conservation techniques had involved covering the charred edges of the manuscript with paper in order to stabilise it and to prevent further parts of it being lost each time it was handled.

One aspect of the notations in the Perkins Folio that disturbed him was that the ink notations had apparently been written over pencil notations.
Or, thought Madden, some clever forger had first decided to make these notations in pencil, and then to give them the look of antiquity by writing over them in ink.
There are those who defend Collier, claiming that Frederic Madden made the pencil notations in order to discredit Collier.

It also casts light on the theory and practice of brass-rubbing in the first half of the nineteenth century, as well discussing the problems posed to scholarly institutions in housing the rubbings which artists and antiquarians were producing in such large numbers.

The primary source for the Old English Consolation of Philosophy is the tenth-century British Library Cotton MS, Otho A. vi, the only surviving copy of Alfred the Great’s prose and verse translation of Boethius.
Mistakenly considered lost in the same infamous Cotton Library fire in 1731 that burned away the edges of the Beowulf manuscript, the burnt remains of Otho A. vi were rediscovered by Frederic Madden in a garret at the British Museum in the middle of the nineteenth-century (see Andrew Prescott, “
Under Madden's supervision, the burnt leaves were placed in individual paper frames of the restoration binding by Henry Gough in 1844.

Illumination is the art of decorating a manuscript with line drawings, colour and gilding.
The art of illumination was revived in Victorian times through the encouragement of people such as Henry Shaw, who copied manuscripts held in the British Museum with the cooperation and support of Sir Frederic Madden, the Museum’s Keeper of Manuscripts; William Morris and Edward Johnston.
Illuminated manuscripts of medieval times were almost always religious books.
