Young Frederic Thesiger was originally destined for a naval career, and he served as a midshipman on board the CaInbrian frigate in 1807 at the second bombardment of Copenhagen.
He left four sons and three daughters, of whom the eldest, Frederick Augustus, 2nd Baron Chelmsford (182 71905), earned distinction as a soldier, while the third, Alfred Henry Thesiger (1838-1880) was made a lord justice of appeal and a privy councillor in 1877, at the early age of thirty-nine, but died only three years later.
In 1225 Chelmsford was made the centre for the collection of fifteenths from the county of Essex, and in 1227 it became the regular seat of assizes and quarter-sessions.

Frederic John Napier Thesiger, 1st Viscount Chelmsford (12 August 1868 - 1 April 1933) was a British statesmen who served as Viceroy of India from 1916 to 1921.
Succeeding his father in 1905 to become 3rd Baron, Chelmsford was appointed Governor of Queensland (1905 to 1909), and then became Governor of New South Wales (1909 to 1913).
In 1924, despite being a life-long Conservative, Chelmsford was persuaded to join the Labour government of Ramsay MacDonald in 1924 as First Lord of the Admiralty, though this was a technical post and he never joined the Party.
