Fredericia is a city located in Fredericia municipality in the eastern part of the Jutland peninsula, Denmark.
Fredericia was almost selected as the Danish capital, due to its central location and large port; but in the end Copenhagen became the focus of attention due to its massive population.
Every July 6 the town of Fredericia holds a festival to commemorate the 1849 Battle of Fredericia, fought during the First War of Schleswig, in which Danish troops won a victory over the Schleswig-Holstein rebels who were laying siege to the city.

The victorious sortie from Fredericia still marks the town in the form of soldiers’ graves and memorials.
Every year thousands of Fredericia’s residents and visitors gather on 5 and 6 July for a very special ceremony complete with a torchlight parade and concerts in memory of the fallen and to celebrate the victory.
The fortifications at Fredericia were dismantled in 1909 and later bought by the municipality which scheduled the ramparts and the Citadel.

Fredericia’s location beside the Little Belt with its deep waters and good navigation conditions was the original reason for the foundation of the Port of Fredericia.
A boat harbour was established for the rapidly growing fishing industry, and in 1866 the arrival of the railway in Fredericia enabled the harbour to also handle ferry transport.
Freight traffic to and from the Port of Fredericia increased dramatically at the end of the 19th century, and in 1905 the first plans for a harbour in Møllebugten were drawn up.

 The Battle of Fredericia 6th of July 1849
Fredericia was besieged by the Schleswig-Holsteinian army under General Bonin on the 9th of May 1849.
Fredericia is located on the South and East side of Jutland surrounded by a strait “Little Belt”, which at that place is rather narrow.
Four of the most densely built areas in the town were destroyed, but as the fires were quickly put out, and as it is impossible to observe the inner town from outside the rampart, General Bonin believed the damage to the town to be insignificant.

 Possibility of more environmentally sound transport in Fredericia town centre
The Fredericia local authority has had a traffic action plan drawn up, presenting a wide array of possible local government tools that will be capable of relieving traffic pressure in central Fredericia.
The plan proposes a restructuring of Fredericia’s existing seven bus routes, allowing almost all diesel-fuelled buses to be excluded from the fortified town area.
A local Agenda 21 group, the group that focuses on Fredericia’s traffic problems, is continuing the work on the project proposals, and has been asked to present the next set of recommendations in the matter.

After the Treaty of Westphalia (1648), which abolished the jurisdiction of bishops over the North-German Protestant territory, an Apostolic vicariate was erected to govern these scattered parishes and those in Scandinavia.
The number of Catholics amounted at that time to 865, of whom 550 lived in Copenhagen and 58 on Fredericia; the rest were scattered in the cities and over the country.
Hostilities began again in the spring of 1849, and were continued with varying success (defeat of the Danes at Eckernförde, Düppel, Kolding, their victory of Fredericia).

The Danes wanted to protect the Northern part of Jutland, and at the same time they wanted to defend Als with its bridgehead at Sundeved, and the island of Funen with its bridgehead at Fredericia.
The fighting was not renewed until July 1850 with the major battle of Isted,when 27.000 Germans and 37.000 Danes clashed for two days on the 24th and 25th of July.
