Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, KG, GCB, GCVO, PC (15 January 1841–14 June 1908), known as Frederick Stanley until 1886 and as The Lord Stanley of Preston between 1886 and 1893, was Colonial Secretary from 1885 to 1886 and Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893.
In 1886 he was created Baron Stanley of Preston, in the County Palatine of Lancaster, and was appointed President of the Board of Trade, in which post he remained until 1888, when he was appointed Governor General of Canada.
Stanley declined to interfere, citing the proposed disallowal as unconstitutional.

The first Stanley Cup playoff game occurred in March 17, 1894, and the first game where the Cup was on the line occurred on March 22 the same year.

Unfortunately, Lord Stanley himself never saw a game where his trophy was on the line, nor did he ever present the Cup bearinghis name to the champions, having to return to England in 1893.
The trophy is colloquially known as "Lord Stanley's Mug" or simply as "The Silver Cup" and tradition dictates that the winningteam drink champagne from the top bowl after theirvictory (a reference to this was made in The Simpsons - Krusty the Klown drank from the Cup, then promptly hurled into it).
