Frederick Charles Riggs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Frederick Charles Riggs (VC, MM) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 1 October 1918 near Epinoy, France, Sergeant Riggs, having led his platoon through strong uncut wire under severe fire, continued straight on and although losing heavily from flanking fire, succeeded in reaching his objective, where he captured a machine-gun.
Subsequently, when the enemy again advanced in force, Sergeant Riggs cheerfully encouraged his men exhorting them to resist to the last, and while doing so was killed.

A Tribute to Marlon Riggs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Through the neutralizing conventions of the historical survey, Riggs prevents his account from being reduced to his positioning, and reading ethnicity as merely “notional”—some else's idea of who you are—he implies that there is no group of which he can be taken as representative, virtually no thing for a representation to represent.
In Riggs' representations dominant culture is not the audience, the standard, or the villain, and to view his “other” images, white heterosexuals abandon the very spectatorial privileges whose primacy is the foundation of traditional cinema.
Riggs' narration pushes this observation further to insist that the fault lies less with the particular content of the images than with the choice of the social unity of the family to measure African American achievement.
