From his father Burnham inherited his instinct for wood-craft, and to this instinct, which in him is as keen as in a wild deer or a mountain lion, he has added, in the jungle and on the prairie and mountain ranges, years of the hardest, most relentless schooling.
By now Burnham was a very prominent member of the "vortrekers" and pioneers at Buluwayo, and Sir Frederick Carrington, who was in command of the forces, attached him to his staff.
Besides seeking for mines, Hammond and Burnham, with Gardner Williams, another American who also made his fortune in South Africa, are working together on a scheme to import to this country at their own expense many species of South African deer.

Gardner's next assignment was with the first operational F-14 squadron (VF-1) at NAS Miramar, San Diego, California, from where he flew the TOMCAT and participated in two Western Pacific and Indian Ocean cruises while deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS ENTERPRISE.
Gardner logged a total of 337 hours in space and 225 orbits of the Earth on these two flights.
Gardner retired from the U.S. Navy in October 1990 and accepted a position with TRW Inc. in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Complying with the Secretary of War's request for state defense councils, Governor Frederick D. Gardner called on Missourians April 12, 1917, six days after the United States declared war against Germany, to lend all idle money for purchasing seeds, machinery, and teams with which to raise more crops.
Four hundred executives from towns all over the state came to a meeting in Jefferson City April 23 to devise ways and means for increasing and conserving food supply since they thought Missouri could assist the nation best by furnishing food.
