Frederick George Topham, VC was a Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
The former paratrooper, who jumped into battle with Topham in 1945 when the former hardrock miner was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry, led the initiative to conduct the fundraising campaign.
Topham was a 27-year-old medical orderly when he parachuted into battle on March 24, 1945, as one of the last major engagements of the war got underway.

For his demonstrated courage throughout the day, "Toppy" Topham was recommended for the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour in the British Commonwealth, which King George V approved on August 2, 1945.
Topham's heroism was acknowledged publicly with a parade and civic reception in Toronto on August 8, 1945; one hundred members of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion served as a guard of honour.

Topham, a medic with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, won the highest British medal for bravery in the crossing of the Rhine River in 1945.
Topham's VC citation says he parachuted onto the German side of the Rhine on March 24, 1945.
"Without hesitation and on his own initiative, Cpl. Topham went forward through intense fire to replace the orderlies who had been killed before his eyes." He was shot through the nose as he helped the man, but carried him to safety.
