Frederick Haynes Newell (May 6, 1863 - July 5, 1932), First Director of the United States Reclamation Service, was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania.
Newell was appointed Chief Engineer under Charles D. Walcott, then Director of the U. Geological Survey.
Frederick Haynes Newell was Secretary of the National Geographic Society from 1892 - 1893 and from 1897 - 1899, Secretary of the American Forestry Association after 1895, President of the American Association of Engineers in 1919.

Newell was born on March 5, 1862, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, a small lumber and mining town in the northwest part of the state.
Newell's principle weakness was his inability to say 'No,' and that his principal mistake was in taking up too much work which was the result of his yielding to pressure in various regions, for the sake of avoiding antagonism and criticism, but that it had had the reverse effect.
Newell was forced to resign from the Reclamation Bureau in 1915 by Secretary of the Interior Franklin K. Lane, and soon thereafter became head of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Illinois.
