 Sportscience History Makers - Hopkins
Hopkin's breakthrough discovery isolated and identified the structure of the amino acid tryptophan, for which he shared the 1929 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology.
Hopkins both produced pioneering studies in nutritional biochemistry and collaborated with physiologist Walter Morley Fletcher (mentor to future Nobel Laurette A.V. Hill) to study muscle chemistry.
Hopkins won honors -- first professor of biochemistry at Cambridge; knighthood (1925); Copley Medal of the Royal Society (1926); President of the Royal Society (1931); Order of Merit (1935); highest civilian prize -- and actively researched until his retirement, an admirable exemplar for Exercise Nutrition (Baldwin, 1972; Needham and Baldwin, 1949).

Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins, biochemical pioneer, discoverer of vitamins.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Frederick Gowland Hopkins was born in the English seaside town of Eastbourne, in 1861.
Although a mediocre teacher in introductory classes, Hopkins was inspiring at the advanced level, and by the time he died seventy-five of his former students were Professors of Biochemistry throughout the world.
Although his Nobel Prize in 1929 was "for his discovery of the growth-stimulating vitamins", for Hopkins, nutritional studies were secondary to his research on cellular metabolism: the very complex sequence of chemical reactions by which living cells extract energy from food molecules.

The English biochemist Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins (1861-1947) was the first to recognize the necessity for "accessory factors" in the diet, thereby initiating important work in vitamin research.
During his last few years, Hopkins, who was the ablest analyst and medical specialist in England, suffered from a number of increasing disabilities, including loss of sight.
As the undisputed dean of English biochemistry, which he had established almost single-handedly, Hopkins was the recipient of many honorary degrees, honors, and prizes, including fellowship in the Royal Society (1906), knighthood (1925), the Copley Medal (1926), and the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine (1929).

Furthermore, this Hopkins added a footnote to Huntington stating that he had himself gone to California with Miller on the "Pacific." Contrary to Latta's claim, this letter is strong evidence that Huntington's partner was the New York Hopkins – and not a mysterious Hopkins from North Carolina.

Hopkins (Cambridge University) won the 1929 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of essential nutrients, now known as vitamins, which are needed in animal diets for growth and for health.
Before his work, most researchers believed that diet-linked illnesses, such as the scurvy that sailors suffered from during long trips, were caused by a toxic substance in certain foods.
But Hopkins suspected that such diseases were actually due to something missing in the diet.
