It was with XIV Corps that Cavan was despatched to the Italian Front in the wake of the Caporetto fiasco in November 1917.
It was in this capacity that Cavan led the Italian Tenth Army which struck a decisive bow at the Battle of Vittorio Veneto, the action which sounded the final death blow of the Austro-Hungarian army towards the close of the war.
The Earl of Cavan, Frederick Lambart, died in 1946.

The clue to his nickname is found in the typescript, ‘Recollections Hazy but Happy’, part of the Cavan Papers at Churchill College, Cambridge.
Cavan wrote the recollections when he was 80.

He was born 10th September 1763, the only son of the sixth Earl by his second wife Elizabeth, nee Davies, the eldest daughter of George Davies, a Commissioner for the Navy.
