With Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder, McCubbin is acknowledged as developing in Australia an impressionistic technique of painting, and illustrating scenes that embraced the nationalistic concerns of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Of all his peers, McCubbin's subjects are the most firmly placed in the Australian landscape, and in particular the city of Melbourne and its surrounding environs: Box Hill, Brighton, Macedon and South Yarra.
Although McCubbin is most widely known for his heroic images of pioneering life,(Bridget Whitelaw, The Art of Frederick McCubbin, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 1991, p.1) many critics agree that he produced some of his most brilliant works in the last years of his life, and praise the sparkling freedom of the later works.

McCubbin is a significant artist, but the idiom Burgess has created to explore his subject is inadequate for a number of important reasons that beset gifted young local composers.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, domestic art began to thrive (particularly with the "Heidelberg School" in what was then an outer suburb of Melbourne) and the National Gallery was well-placed to add an excellent collection of key Australian works, which trace the metamorphosis of imported European styles into distinctively Australian art.
One of the most famous works at the gallery is The Pioneer by Frederick McCubbin (1904).

McCubbin in particular remained faithful to the blue-gum country of Box Hill for the rest of his life.
Unlike other Australian Impressionists, McCubbin was less interested in bright sunlight effects than in embuing his scenes with a certain (often somber or melancholy) mood.

 McCubbin, Frederick
One of Australia’s most famous and popular artists, McCubbin was born on 25 February 1855 at 165 King Street, Melbourne, the third of eight children to Alexander McCubbin (d 1877) and Annie née McWilliams; his parents arrived in April 1853 from Curvan, Ayrshire, Scotland trying their luck in the gold boom.
Around 1870, McCubbin was enrolled in the newly formed Artisans’ School of Design at Trades Hall, Carlton then the only form of art institution available but later joined the National Gallery of Victoria.
With an in depth attention to the subject in reflective poses, McCubbin’s unique style captured the nostalgia of the bush life amid the developments of the 19th century; amongst the classics include “The Lost Child” (1886), “While the Billy Boils” (1888), “Down on his luck” (1889), “On the Wallaby Track” (1896) and “The Pioneer” (1904).

This is like most of McCubbin' -s late 1890's landscapes showing the artist's interests in typical Australian themes. The composition is based on ellipses within triangles, creates 'window frames' or vignettes and these transform a distant view into something more intimate, although it helps make the horizon seem even further away.
The bright and bold color nearby of the ground cover and the featheriness of the foliage on the middle ground trees have given McCubbin a lot of scope to show off his skill at handling paint to achieve a variety of effects and show a typical Australian bush scene.
