Oakeley's case, love for that religious communion in which he found himself, was the principle that guided him at last to safety and peace.

Oakeley began his ministry on July 5, 1839, and that date may be regarded as the beginning of the history of All Saints', Margaret Street.
Oakeley was a first-rate musician, and he laid the foundation of the great musical tradition of the Margaret Street church.

Oakeley had taken Holy Orders with the Church of England in 1828, but switched to Roman Catholicism in 1845.
In 1852 Oakeley became canon at Westminster Cathedral, and he often worked among the poor of Westminster.
His original translation of the hymn, done in 1841, began "Ye faithful, approach ye." But in 1845 he rewrote the beginning of the hymn, "O come, all ye faithful, Joyfully triumphant," the well-known words that are widely sung today.

The words from the original manuscript by John Francis Wade (1711-86) were published in 1760, along with the melody as we know it today.
In 1841, the hymn was translated by Canon Frederick Oakeley, with the opening lines, "Ye faithful, approach ye." It was first published in 1852 in Murray's Hymnal, with the familiar opening lines.
While numerous other translations have been made, Oakeley's is the most widely recognized.

Born 5 September, 1802, at Shrewsbury; died 30 Jan., 1880, at Islington, the youngest son of Sir Charles Oakeley, Bart, he graduated at Christchurch in 1824, and three years later was elected Fellow of Balliol, where he afterwards became the close friend of W.G. Ward, with whom he joined the Tractarian party.
In 1839 he became incumbent of Margaret Chapel, the predecessor of the well-known All Saints, Margaret Street, London, soon noted for its high church services; he was a frequent visitor to Oxford, and stood by Ward at the time of his condemnation in 1845.
