 Frederick Sleigh Roberts, Earl Roberts - LoveToKnow 1911
FREDERICK SLEIGH ROBERTS ROBERTS, Earl (1832), British soldier, second son of General Sir Abraham Roberts, G.C.B., was born at Cawnpore, India, on the 30th of September 1832.
Roberts distinguished himself at the engagement of Khudaganj, on the 2nd of January 1858, by capturing, in single-handed combat, a standard from two sepoys, and also by cutting down a sepoy about to kill a sowar.
In 1 867 Roberts was appointed assistant quartermastergeneral to Sir Donald Stewart's Bengal Brigade for Abyssinia.

Born at Cawnpore, India on 30 September 1832, Roberts was the son of General Sir Abraham Roberts.
Both his sons having predeceased him, including Frederick Hugh Sherston Roberts VC who was killed in action at the battle of Colenso during the Boer War, Roberts's barony became extinct, but under the special remainder granted with them he was succeeded in the Earldom and Viscountcy by his elder surviving daughter.

 Frederick Sleigh Roberts Biography
Frederick Roberts was born in Cawnpore, India, on Sept. 30, 1832, the son of Gen. Sir Abraham Roberts, a British soldier in Indian service.
During the Indian mutiny, Roberts was at the siege of Delhi and at the second relief of Lucknow and won the Victoria Cross at Khudaganj in January 1858.
Roberts force-marched his troops from Kabul and defeated the Afghans definitively at Kandahar in September, a victory that made him a popular hero in England, where he was feted after being given a baronetcy and made commander in chief of the Madras army (1881).

Lord Roberts unfortunately contracted a chill during this day, which happened to be very wet and stormy, and when Wilson went to Sir John's house late at night to inquire, he learnt that the doctor took a serious view of his patient's condition as pneumonia was developing.
Lord Roberts was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry in the face of the enemy while serving as a Lieutenant in the Bengal Horse Artillery (Indian Army) during the Indian Mutiny.
Roberts at the time of his appointment was still serving in South Africa, so upon his arrival at Paddington Station, London in January of 1901, a Guard of Honour was mounted by the Irish Regiment.

During the war, Winston Churchill was imprisoned in the Staats Model School in Pretoria but escaped to Mozambique.

One of the most outstanding portraits (in my opinion) is Sargent's portrait of Frederick Sleigh Robert (The Earl of Kandahar).
Sargent captures the essence of this career military man (who served in India, Afghanistan and South Africa) in a most masculine portrayal of Roberts in his Field Marshal Uniform.
The Lord Roberts scan is from an old issue of American Heritage.

On 1st of July feeling that he could not hold both Machhi Bhawan and the Residency keeping in view his limited strength, Lawrence withdrew the garrison to the Residency.
The British also blew up the magazine in Machhi Bhawan which contained about 240 barrels of gun powder and 50 lakh rounds of Ball and Gun ammunition.The Siege of the Lucknow thus commenced from 2nd of July 1857382.
To take up these duties he arrived at Allahabad from Calcutta on 1st of September and reached Cawnpore on 15th of September.
