Frederick William MacMonnies was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1863 and began pursuing a career as an artist at an early age.
Both men remained important influences on MacMonnies by not only by their encouragement of the continued development of his work by sending him to study in Europe, but also by facilitating commissions for monuments and architectural accompaniments throughout their many years as friends and colleagues.
Frederick MacMonnies' Young Faun with Heron, which was acquired for the permanent collection in honor of Salvatore G. Cilella, Jr., Executive Director of the museum from 1987 to 2001, was purchased through the generosity of:

Known primarily as a sculptor, MacMonnies works are noted for their realism and naturalism.

Frederick William MacMonnies was a sculptor and painter.
MacMonnies worked as an apprentice in New York from 1880–84 and also from 1885-86 in the studio of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
MacMonnies became a successful sculptor and was able to open his own studio.

 Frederick MacMonnies - American Sculptor
In 1880 at the age of seventeen he was employed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, first as a general helper and as he showed great promise later a studio assistant.  He studied in the evenings at the both the National Academy of Design and The Art Students League.
MacMonnies went to Paris in 1884 to study sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he excelled, winning in 1886 the Prix d'Atelier which was the highest award given to foreign students.  He returned to New York and again worked for Saint-Gaudens for a year.
MacMonnies returned once more to Paris where he was to stay until the outbreak of the First World War when he returned to the United States where he stayed until his death.

While a student in Alexandre Falguière's atelier at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, MacMonnies began modeling his first lifesize figure depicting Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt and personification of the moon.
Although indebted to the examples of his master, MacMonnies' interpretation of Diana was independent and original, announcing his transition from student to professional artist.
He outfitted his figure with traditional symbols—a crescent moon in her hair and a bow in her left hand; MacMonnies did not produce a perfect classical goddess but instead created a naturalistic nude, modeled from the face and form of a living woman.

The spectacle that was made regarding this gift, a salvo in the American ''Culture Wars,'' gave MacMonnies and this sculpture a great deal of notoriety in the United States: there is an example of the ''Bacchante'' in the permanent collections of most of the large museums in the United States and France.

In this entry of March 31, 1892, William Macbeth announces an "important business change." Having worked with print dealer Frederick Keppel for ten years, Macbeth decides to strike out on his own and open a gallery devoted entirely to American art.
In 1880 at age of seventeen, MacMonnies served first as a helper then as an assistant in the studio of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
In these entries from September 1884, MacMonnies had just arrived in Paris and finding Académie Julian too expensive, he makes arrangements to take classes at Colarossi's Academy while studying for his entrance exams for the École and making connections with John J. Boyles, Lorado Taft, and other American sculptors in Paris.
