In his Introduction to the dictionary, de Houtman claimed to have made some observations of the southern stars on his first voyage in 1595–97, and to have revised and increased the number on his second voyage, 1598–1602.

The local Portuguese traders introduced de Houtman to the Banten sultan, who promptly entered into an optomistic treaty with the Dutch, writing "We are well content to have a permanent league of alliance and friendship with His Highness the Prince
Maurice of Nassau, of the Netherlands and with you, gentlemen." Unfortunately, de Houtman was undiplomatic and insulting to the sultan, and was turned away for "rude behaviour" without being able to buy any spices at all.

Constellation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
But Renaisance star catalogs by Johann Bayer and John Flamsteed required every star to be in a constellation, and the number of visible stars in a constellation to be manageably small.
Twelve of the constellations in the southern celestial hemisphere were not observable by the Greeks, and were created by Dutch navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman in the sixteenth century and first cataloged by Johann Bayer.
Other proposed constellations didn't make the cut, most notably Quadrans Muralis (now part of Boötes) for which the Quadrantid meteors are named.

 Plancius, Petrus (1552-1622)
Keyser died in Java the following year, but his catalogue of 135 stars arranged in 12 new constellations (some perhaps acquired from the myths of local peoples), prepared with the help of explorer-colleague Frederick de Houtman, was delivered to Plancius, who inscribed the new constellations on a globe he prepared in 1598.
Keyser and de Houtman's constellations are Apus the Bird of Paradise, Chamaeleon, Dorado the Goldfish (or Swordfish), Grus the Crane, Hydrus the Sea Monster, Indus the (American) Indian, Musca the Fly, Pavo the Peacock, Phoenix, Triangulum Australe the Southern Triangle, Tucana the Toucan, and Volans the Flying Fish.
These constellations, together with three other new ones added by Plancius himself, Camelopardalis, Columba, and Monoceros, were then incorporated by Johannes Bayer in his sky atlas, the Uranometria, in 1603.
