Frederiksted is characterized by a smaller scale, wider streets, and charming Victorian architectural detail.
Founded in the 1750's, the town languished until the second half of the 19th century, when it replaced Christiansted as the main port and supported a vibrant community of craftsman, dockworkers, fisherman, small shopkeepers, and merchants.
After being virtually destroyed during a labor insurrection in 1878, Frederiksted was quickly rebuilt by skilled local craftsman influenced by the gingerbread style of the late Victorian period.

The Frederiksted economy plunged when Carnival Cruise Lines - by far the largest cruise ships to visit St. Croix - pulled out in May of 2002, citing crime against its passengers and crew while on St. Croix and a lack of demand for the island.

Messages were sent from Danish authorities to von Scholten, begging him to come to Frederiksted since it was clear that if the slaves became hostile, they would burn the town and kill every white person within reach.
The whipping post, a device used to beat slaves within an inch of their lives, was torn from the ground and the slaves carried it to the wharf, throwing it as far out to sea as possible.
One historical account states that once von Scholten arrived in Frederiksted, he immediately went into the fort to be briefed on the events.

Frederiksted is located at the western tip of St. Croix, a 45-minute drive from Christiansted.
Unfortunately, the elaborate West Indian gingerbread trim on buildings such as the Lacy Victoria House, which was built before 1803, has largely fallen victim to time and hurricanes.
If you are arriving by cruise ship, my advice is take the first taxi out of town and leave Frederiksted for last.

The salute of Old Glory which had been raised on an American brigantine at port in Frederiksted was a violation of the laws of Denmark’s neutrality however the islands had helped the British colonist in America sealing a friendliness between the two colonies, and the salute was therefore appropriate.
