Frederick William IV of Prussia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
King Frederick William IV of Prussia (October 15, 1795 - January 2, 1861), the eldest son and successor of Frederick William III of Prussia, reigned as King of Prussia from 1840 to 1861.
When revolution broke out in Prussia in March 1848, part of the larger Revolutions of 1848, the king initially moved to repress it with the army, but later decided to recall the troops and place himself at the head of the movement on March 19.
This was a more liberal system than had existed in Prussia before 1848, but was still a conservative system of government in which the monarch, the aristocracy, and the military retained most of the power.

Fredrich Wilhelm´s son Friedrich III’s reign 1688-1713 fall in the shadows of both his father’s and his son’s reigns, despite of that it was he who got the emperor’s permission to proclaim himself as king of Prussia 1701 whereby the Brandenburg state changed its name to Prussia.
Friedrich’s son Friedrich Wilhelm had unlike his father no cultural interests, but he was economical and hardworking and under his reign 1713-1740 the Prussian finances and its agriculture and industry were greatly improved.
Friedrich Wilhelm’s greatest interest lay however in his army, which was large for a country like Prussia already when he ascended the throne, in spite of that he increased the army from 38 000 men to 83 000 and drilled it so hard so it became the best in Europe.

The use of Torture had, I believe, fallen rather obsolete in Prussia; but now the very threat of it shall vanish,--the threat of it, as we may remember, had reached Friedrich himself, at one time.
This, which is the product of all fine tendencies, is likewise their centre or focus out of which they start again, with some chance of fulfilment;--and we may judge in how many directions Friedrich was willing to expand himself, by the multifarious kinds he was inviting, and negotiating for.
To the last years of his life, as from the first days of his reign, it was evident in what honor he held Friedrich Wilhelm's memory; and the words "my Father," when they turned up in discourse, had in that fine voice of his a tone which the observers noted.
