The siege, which was then raised, is further commemorated by a monument to the brave defence of the brothers Peter and Hans Kolbjornsen.
Fredrikshald is close to the Swedish frontier, and had previously (1660) withstood invasion, after which its name was changed from Halden to the present form in 1665 in honor of Frederick III.
The town was almost totally destroyed by fire in 1759 and 1826.

This Norwegian fortress was constructed in the 17th century as a replacement for the border fortress at Bohus, which had been lost when the province of Bahusia (or Bohuslån) was ceded to Sweden by the terms of the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658.
In the summer of 1675, 1800 men were kept at work on the fortresses at Akershus, Fredrikstad, and Fredrikshald.
At the outbreak of the Gyldenløve War in 1675 a large contingent (4000 men) were concentrated at Fredrikshald under General Russenstein.

In the 1860s Fredrikshald had a population of about 9,200 people.
The name was changed to Det kommunale sykehus, Fredrikshald because they wanted to get rid of the old name which so many people had dreadful memories of.
In 1953 a completely new hospital was built on Stangefjellet, overlooking the town, and the old hospital became a school - now called Halden v.g.s.

Facing (1699) a coalition of Russia, Poland, and Denmark in the NORTHERN WAR, he forced Denmark to make peace (1700); invaded Poland and had STANISLAUS I enthroned (1704); and, with MAZEPA, invaded Russia, where his army was crushingly defeated (1708).
When Stralsund fell, he fled to Sweden and invaded (1716) Norway, where he was killed in battle (by a bullet in the trenches outside the Norwegian fortress of Fredrikshald in 1718.

There used to be a lot of traffic between Fredrikshald and Kristiania — not only boats loaded with goods, but also people going for a day’s visit or because they had to do some business in the city.
Halden Dampshipselskap was founded in 1889 and the boat, D/S Halden, could take up to 266 passengers and was very modern and well equipped for that time.
Later D/S Hankø I and II served the route for many years.

When he came home, probably at Christmas or New Year in 1718 he told his neighbor about what had happen at the fortress of Fredrikshald and said I saw when the king was assassinated by his own people!

I can add that there are some music in manuscript for the norwegian sister.
When Bellmann fled from his creditors in Stockholm, he lived for a while in the little town Fredrikshald (now Halden) in the southeast corner of Norway - my hometown.
Maybe he bought a sister from Amund Hansen, who lived in Fredrikshald and was considered to be the greatest norwegian sister maker.
