With neighbouring town Sarpsborg, Fredrikstad forms the fifth largest urban area in Norway set within the two municipalities; Fredrikstad contributing approximately 58% of the population.
The town centre is situated on the west bank of Glomma, while the old town on the east bank is Northern Europe's best preserved fortified town.
