The Free Art License seems to be the most suited for this king of artwork, since it's an adapted GPL for Arts : free and copyleft.
The problem with the use of the word "creator" in the license is due to a bad translation, it should be fixed soon.

I totally agree here, but for problems I'll address later GPL doesn't really cut it for artwork, at least a lot of people I'm talking to think so.

INAL; The orginal artist holds the copyright and released his/her art under the GPL we can't relicence it without the approval of the orginal artist.
Also note all art which has been released under the GPL will always be available under the GPL, you can't retroactive relicence things (unless you're part of the gouverment of course).
Trying to change the license for all graphics in wesnoth would be nearly impossible and having parts of the graphics under a different license than others would be a pain to manage.

If people want a GPL-style license for art, one that requires that sources be provided, they should probably just use the GPL.
The Free Art License has been out for a while now, and I drafted (but fortunately never used) a BSD-style art license a few years back.
