Although the objects of the Free Church councils are thus in their nature and spirit religious rather than political, there are occasions on which action is taken on great national affairs.
A remarkable manifestation of this unprecedented reunion was the fact that a committee of the associated churches prepared and published a catechism expressing the positive and fundamental agreement of all the Evangelical Free Churches on the essential doctrines of Christianity (see The Contemporary Review, January 1899).

The Methodists stemmed from the radical element in the Church of England, and their religious excitement was fed by recurrent tides of immigration into Pennsylvania.
St. Stephen's parish, therefore, from 1817 to 1871 was within the diocese known as the Protestant Episcopal Church in the State of Pennsylvania; from 1871 to 1909 it was within the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania; and after 1909, the diocese encompassing St. Stephen's was called the Diocese of Bethlehem.

They plan to invite a bishop from the Reformed Episcopal Church in USA to speak to Convocation to learn from their experiences — the REC are uniting with the Anglican Province of America, a basically Anglo-Catholic denomination.
From this they hold the FCE to be a sola scriptura Church and place their overriding emphasis on biblical Evangelicalism, opposing the modern ecumenical movement.
