Free trade - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Free trade is the absence of artificial (government-imposed) barriers to trade among individuals and firms in different nations.
Some have argued that many of the alleged problems in the current free trade system, such as the race to the bottom and restriction of the movement of labor, would be eliminated by having a single world government with one law and no borders.
Historically, the free trade movement was skeptical and even hostile to the notion of intellectual property, regarded as monopolistic and harmful to a free, competitive economy.

Free trade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Free trade is the untaxed flow of goods and services between countries, and is a name given to economic policies and parties supporting increases in such trade.
Free trade supporters argue that all countries have the right to opt out of the world market through isolationism and that companies are fictional persons who are taxed without representation and that the balance of power should shift away from the governments that exploit them.
Free trade, then, creates an economic incentive for a race to the bottom in regulatory institutions; countries with lax, lenient, non-enforced, or selectively enforced regulatory legal structures will have a competitive advantage in attracting investment to their countries, and not merely in wages.

Free Trade Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Free Trade Party, later known as the Anti-Socialist Party, was a political party in Australia from the 1880s until 1909.
The Labor party nonetheless continued to grow in electoral strength, and Reid gained the support of several Protectionists who were antipathetic to Labor.
Eventually Reid convinced Deakin that their two parties' future lay in a merger, and the Free Trade Party merged with the Protectionists to become the Commonwealth Liberal Party in 1909.

Protectionist Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
The Protectionist Party was a political party in Australia from the 1880s until 1909.
Labor's program, however, was frequently too radical for the Protectionists, and the party ended up splitting, with the most liberal Protectionists, such as Isaac Isaacs and H B Higgins, supporting Labor while Deakin and the others moved towards George Reid's Free Trade Party.
Deakin overcame his strong personal antipathy to Reid, and, the issue of tariffs having been settled, both wings of the Protectionists merged with the Free Trade Party to become the Commonwealth Liberal Party in 1909.

Opposition to free trade is heavily interest-group driven, and the traditional urge to throw bones to dozens of groups is something the Democrats should think twice about before they make it a centerpiece of their economic policy.
Because "free trade" allows capital to cross borders but keeps labor imprisoned on one side or the other, minimum standards for labor are a requirement to keep "free trade" from promoting a race to the bottom.
Free Trade would actually be a pure positive for Americans if it was inextricably tied to a commitment by Congress to fully exploit the benefits that FT can only offer as a potentiality.

Reid's party was also against the military build-up and conscription that were imposed in response to the Yellow Peril - the unjustified fear that the Japanese emperor, having won a territorial dispute against the Russian Czar in 1905, would then try to victimize the people living in Australia.

He succeeded Sir Henry Parkes as leader of the Free Trade Party, and became Premier of New South Wales in 1894 at the head of a progressive ministry supported by the Labour Party.
He improved his party's position in the 1903 elections, and in August 1904, when the Watson government resigned, he became Prime Minister.
Reid did not have a majority in either House, and he knew it would be only a matter of time before the Deakin's Protectionists patched up their differences with Labor, so he enjoyed himself in office while he could.

Free Trade Agreements and Customs Unions, by Douglas A. Irwin: The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics: Library of ...
Free trade, usually defined as the absence of tariffs, quotas, or other governmental impediments to international trade, allows each country to specialize in the goods that it can produce cheaply and efficiently relative to other countries.
While virtually all economists think free trade is desirable, they differ on how best to make the transition from tariffs and quotas to free trade.
That is because groups that otherwise would be opposed or indifferent to trade reform might join the campaign for free trade if they see opportunities for exporting to the other countries in the trade agreement.
