Ford Foundation: Ford Foundation Annual Report 1954 - 19
On June 19, 1954, the Free University of Berlin dedicated the auditorium, lecture halls and seminar rooms which had been constructed with the support of a Foundation grant of $1,309,500 made in 1951.
Although its policy normally does not permit construction grants, the Foundation has assisted the Free University in the development of its physical plant because of the institution's importance in supporting the principle of freedom of thought in Europe and its unique position as a center of truth and learning on an island surrounded by totalitarianism.
The Free University, which was established in 1948, stemmed from the insistent desire of German students for a democratically-oriented education and from their refusal to attend the Communist-dominated University of Berlin in the Soviet sector of the city.

One inevitable result of immigration is a change in language use and repertoire, and this is the topic that is being studied by a team of Israeli and German investigators under a grant from the German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development to Bar-Ilan University and the Free University of Berlin.
The first, a major interest of Norbert Dittmar of the Free University of Berlin, one of the principal investigators, is the stage of grammaticalization, where a new immigrant goes beyond just repeating chunk of imitated speech and starts to internalize the rules of the new language.
The second issue, of concern especially to Bernard Spolsky of Bar-Ilan University, is convergence, the way the learner of a new language makes a conscious effort to modify pronunciation and usage in order to pass for a native.
