DVD Verdict Review - The Free Willy Trilogy
When Free Willy was released theatrically in the spring of 1993, it became a surprise hit, raking in money and becoming a part of the pop culture zeitgeist, even becoming the source of all manner of bad puns and double-entendres in the opening monologues of late night talk show hosts.
Free Willy—When a benign juvenile delinquent named Jesse (Jason James Richter), abandoned by his negligent mother, is arrested for his graffiti work on a whale storage tank at a Sea World-type amusement park and sent back to clean up his mess as punishment, he forms a bond with Willy, the head-case orca inside the tank.
Willy is delicately handled, only slightly anthropomorphised (he sometimes nods or shakes his head as though he understands English perfectly), yet we still get the sense he has a unique personality (characterized in large part by anger).

Unexpectedly, Willy, the whale who inhabits the tank, takes a liking to Jesse, and the animal and child develop a bond -- a bond that also helps Jesse open up to the adults in his life, including his new parents and the whale's caretakers.
Ironically, Keiko, the whale who played Willy in the film, actually has some real-life problems similar to those dramatized in "Free Willy." He had grown too large for his tank, and his health was suffering as a consequence.
Free Willy has almost an E.T. feel to it, with a boy and a very non-human creature bonding and eventually the strength of that bond being tested when the creature's life is endangered.

 Free Willy
Do any of us truly have free will in a universe of infinite possibilities, or do we live in a deterministic universe in which everything that happens is as certain as the movement of the stars.
It is difficult to say for sure, whether or not the universe is deterministic or indeterministic, if we have free will or are controlled by unseen forces, if accidents and disasters are unavoidable, or if through our own creativity and decisions it is possible to shape the future.
But even if the choices in life which present themselves to us are only illusions in a deterministic universe and we are secretly being controlled by benevolent behavioral scientists, or malevolent opportunists, perhaps we are better off assuming those choices are real and our future together remain uncertain.
