Freedom (political) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The concept of political freedom is closely allied with the concepts of civil liberties and human rights, and the fundamental idea of positive and negative freedom corresponds with the concept of negative and positive rights.
In libertarianism, freedom is defined in terms of lack of government interference in the individual pursuit of happiness, as long as others' freedom is not thereby harmed; for example, capitalists place a high value on freedom from government interference in the economy.
In jurisprudence, freedom is the right to autonomously determine one's own actions; generally it is granted in those fields in which the subject has no obligations to fulfill or laws to obey, according to the interpretation that the hypothetical natural unlimited freedom is limited by the law for some matters.

The Free Software Definition - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF)
Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software.
The freedom to run the program means the freedom for any kind of person or organization to use it on any kind of computer system, for any kind of overall job and purpose, without being required to communicate about it with the developer or any other specific entity.
In order for these freedoms to be real, they must be irrevocable as long as you do nothing wrong; if the developer of the software has the power to revoke the license, without your doing anything to give cause, the software is not free.

Debian -- What Does Free Mean?
Many people new to free software find themselves confused because the word "free" in the term "free software" is not used the way they expect.
Software that is free only in the sense that you don't need to pay to use it is hardly free at all.
While free software is not totally free of constraints (only putting something in the public domain does that) it gives the user the flexibility to do what they need in order to get work done.

The freedom to use a program means the freedom for any kind of person or organization to use it on any kind of computer system, for any kind of overall job, and without being required to communicate subsequently with the developer or any other specific entity.
When talking about free software, it is best to avoid using terms like ``give away'' or ``for free'', because those terms imply that the issue is about price, not freedom.
We prefer the term "free software" because, once you have heard it refers to freedom rather than price, it calls to mind freedom.

Gratis versus Libre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab1.netlab.uky.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
In hacker slang, gratis is typically referred to as free as in beer while libre is referred to as free as in speech.
It can be contrasted with the expressions free as in speech, free as in freedom, or free as in rights, which refer to something which is free of restrictions, as in the freedom of speech.
Since the advent of the free software movement, these terms have entered frequent use for categorising computer programs according to the licenses and legal fetters that cover them, and both this expression and the term gratis are used to distinguish freeware (gratis software) from free software.
