Free association (psychology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Free association (Psychodynamic theory) is a technique used in psychology, devised by Sigmund Freud.
Using the technique of free association, Freud asked patients to relate anything which came into their mind, regardless of how apparently unimportant or potentially embarrassing the memory threatened to be.
This technique assumed that all memories are arranged in a single associative network, and that sooner or later the subject would stumble across the crucial memory.

The objective was to establish a free trade area in industrial goods, first between the EFTA members and then throughout western Europe, without, however, imposing uniform external tariffs or submitting the signatories to the authority of supranational institutions.
Subsequent coalition governments have endorsed free market policies, enabling the country to benefit from an influx of foreign investment and a switch of trading partners: by 1999 three-quarters of its trade was with Western Europe.

Freedom of association as a concept thus grew out of a series of cases in the 1950's and 1960's in which certain States were attempting to curb the activities of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Thus, a right to associate together to further political and social views is protected against unreasonable burdening, 211 but the evolution of this right in recent years has passed far beyond the relatively narrow contexts in which it was given birth.

The Free Association is David Holmes' new band project and this is their remarkable debut album.
True, people weren't quite sure who The Free Association were and whether David was a part of it, but it was undeniably both impressive and intriguing how easily they wove together the lost strands of the past with modern machine music.
The most apparent change is that The Free Association is nine-tenths sung, with new vocalists Sean Reveron and Petra Jean Phillipson taking David’s already extremely infectious and inventive grooves to a whole new dimension.

An ethic of free association speaks to the question of freedom and moves far beyond the narrowed definitional concept and meaning of the fundamental rule in psychoanalysis of free association.
This ethic of free association recognizes, acknowledges, and appreciates that we are born into preexisting systems of meaning and signification.
An ethic of free association involves the freedom to think, the freedom to speak easy, and the freedom to live in a permanent state of questioning the "What is" and the "Why" of that "What is," if one so chooses.

Gale Encyclopedia of Psychology: Free association
The patient, relaxed on a couch in his office, was directed to engage in a free association of ideas that could yield useful insights and to reveal frankly whatever came to mind.
For free association to be effective, it is important for the patient to share his or her thoughts freely without regard to whether they are logical, consistent, or socially appropriate.
Initially, free association can be difficult, because people are accustomed to editing their thoughts, presenting them in a logical, linear fashion, and leaving out potentially embarrassing material.

Creativity (creative) Tools and Techniques - Free Association
Free association contains elements of several other idea-generating techniques and depends on a mental ‘stream of consciousness’ and network of associations of which there are two:
Serial association, start with a trigger, you record the flow of ideas that come to mind, each idea triggering the next, ultimately reaching a potentially useful one.
Centred association, (which is close to classical brainstorming) prompts you to generate multiple associations to the original trigger so that you ‘delve’ into a particular area of associations.

It would also be helpful if you shared your associations with a small helpful group and got their input.

This book presents a way of going about that task, by focusing on free association as the method.

But I would like to see their concern for the right of expressive association extend further, to organizations such as the Boy Scouts that have values different from theirs.
