Diving suit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two divers, one wearing a 1 atmosphere diving suit and the other standard diving dress, preparing to explore the wreck of the RMS Lusitania, 1935.
These types of suit are not exclusively used by divers but are often used for thermal protection by people engaged in other water activities such as sailing, powerboating, windsurfing, waterskiing and swimming.
Levis 'skins' provide swimmers and divers with additional convenience because in warm weather and climates where a complete diveskin is needed underwater, but not at the warmer surface (which might cause over-heating), the neoprene jacket can be removed and you can swim with just your jeans or with a lycra top.

Free-diving -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Competitive free diving is generally broken down into three categories; static, dynamic and depth.
Free Immersion competition is for self-propelled ascent and descent along a line and is for maximum depth.
No Limits competition allows the diver to descend with a weighted sled and ascend with a buoyancy control device, usually an air filled bag with a tether.

CDNN :: Biomechanics of Marine Mammals Offer Lessons for Divers
For scuba divers donning gear such as tanks, regulators with dive computers, and other monitoring gauges, weight belts, buoyancy compensators, knives, spearguns, game-holding bags, underwater photography equipment, and underwater lights, a fin intermediate in length between the two extremes is most popular.
Channels and grooves incorporated into the blade or at the junction of the foot portion and the blade, or both, are supposed to decrease turbulence at the critical points of the fin, which are at the junction of the rigid foot portion and the mobile blade portion.
If the diver dons fins before entering the water, the extended length of the blade makes walking through the water very challenging, especially if waves and surge are present and the diver is carrying a full complement of gear.

Hard-hat divers were commonplace by the turn of the 20th Century, but it wasn't until the invention of the aqualung by Jacques Cousteau and his friend Emile Gagnan in 1943 that free-diving as a commercial activity began to decline.
As the diver ascends (rising), the water pressure becomes less and the air in his blood begins to expand (because there is less pressure on it).
As scuba diving proliferates and the lure of greater monetary awards entice divers deeper for longer, the fatalities associated with scuba diving have risen dramatically.

Local scuba divers are sad and outraged that one of their own used a spear gun to kill a giant sea bass, a protected species, in a marine preserve off La Jolla on Sunday.
Experienced divers know that giant sea bass are neither aggressive nor afraid of humans, said John Boyer, a veteran diving instructor from Vista.
Among many scuba divers, giant sea bass are well regarded because of their size and docile nature.

Free diver who died was national champion - The Honolulu Advertiser - Hawaii's Newspaper
Higa was an accomplished diver, regarded by many in the sport as one of the state's best.
The flouts, caused by oxygen deprivation, generally occur during the end of a dive, and most often when the diver, reaching the end of his endurance, is distracted by a fish or tangled equipment and delays surfacing, said Bill Ernst, director of skin diving for the Underwater Society of America.
During a banquet to mark the end of the competition yesterday at Waimea Valley Audubon Center, Lagunte told his fellow fishermen that the competitive nature of the sport had changed it from its cultural beginnings, and that something must be done to make it more safe.

All of this means that the people most likely to write device drivers come from the companies that develop the hardware - since they have more complete access to information about the design of their hardware than most outsiders.
Moreover, it was traditionally considered in the hardware manufacturer's interest to guarantee that their clients would be able to use their hardware in an optimum way.
In such cases, co-operation on behalf of the vendor is still important, however, as reverse engineering is much more difficult with hardware than it is with software, meaning it may take a long time to learn to operate hardware that has an unknown interface.

I watched the movie "The Grande Blue" the other day and was wondering how the deep free divers, who go as deep down as 400 feet and ascend within a span of few minutes, survive decompression sickness.
Maybe I should go back to diving 101, but I thought the cause of decomp is the water pressure affecting the solubility of nitrogen in the blood stream.
So, as long as the diver is not inhaling nitrogen, are you saying the nitrogen leven in the bloodstrem should not increase regardless of the depth?
