Indoor models are flown inside in places ranging from living rooms up to giant airship hangars with the most common places being sports halls (ie the local gymnasium).
These models are the race cars of the FF world, climbing super fast to great altitude but then transitioning into the magical slow, elegant glide which epitomises Free Flight.
The most impressive Free Flight aircraft seem to fly as if they have a pilot on board; rather than just flying in large even circles they bob and turn, sometimes this way, sometimes that, as if they know where the core of the thermal is and what they should be doing.

  Free Flight Model Airplane
If their flight is disturbed by a gust of wind or rising air current, they must be able to return automatically to a normal flight path.
These outdoor free flight models tend to be designed for two very different flying modes: climbing rapidly under power or tow, and gliding slowly while circling with minimum fall rate.
Models flown indoors do not depend on rising air currents, but they must be designed for maximum flight efficiency, because of the limited energy stored in the rubber or electric power source.

Free flight (model aircraft) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The essence of free flight model aircraft is that the model's flight is not controlled by the flyer once the model has been released.

When the aircraft's wings are forced through the air by the energy of gravity or by an engine-driven propeller, the airfoil shape generates a tremendous amount of "lift" due to the vacuum created on the upper surface of the wing and by the force of the air molecules striking the underside of the wing.
When a model aircraft is flown at altitudes exceeding about 5,000 feet, a longer runway and a more powerful engine than that recommended by the manufacturer will be required for safe take-off and flight.
If your model is flying in an area of gently rising air (in a "thermal"), it may actually gain altitude with its fuselage level with the horizon because the force of that rising air is producing an angle of attack that will allow increased lift.

Model aircraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Model aircraft are flying or non-flying models of existing or imaginary aircraft, often scaled down versions of full size planes, using materials such as balsa wood, foam and fiberglass.
Aircraft models can be bought already built and painted, as well as models that require construction, painting and gluing, or snap fit models (most of which come with decals or paint already applied).
Flying models borrow construction techniques from vintage full-sized aircraft (although models rarely use metal structures.) These might consist of forming the frame of the model using thin strips of light wood such as balsa, then covering it with fabric and subsequently doping the fabric to form a light and sturdy frame which is also airtight.
