7.5 Flexible Pavement Construction - Placement
Since the screed is free floating it will slide across the HMA at an angle and height that will place these six forces in equilibrium.
Locating the screed tow point near the middle of the tractor significantly reduces the transmission of small elevation changes in the front and rear of the tractor to the screed.
The floating screeds used by today’s pavers are acted upon by six basic forces, which when left undisturbed result in an equilibrium screed angle and elevation that determines mat thickness.

Variable width material distribution system for asphalt pavers and the like - Patent 4749304
It has been known heretofore to construct a floating screed paver with a power extendable/retractable screed arrangement, enabling the operator of the paver to vary the effective width of the screed at any time, even while the paver is in motion and in operation.
Thus, the free lower portion of the intermediate panel 101 is confined by the cooperative relationship between the upwardly bent lip portions 103, 113.
Additionally, the movable auger arrangement is mounted on the screed or strike-off itself, such that the significant and highly variable reaction forces on the auger are necessarily imparted to the screed, having a potentially undesirable effect upon the smoothness of the pavement mat.

In areas with very soft or expansive subgrades such as clay or peat, thick gravel bases or stabilization of the subgrade with Portland cement or lime can be required.
The actual material used in paving is termed HMA (Hot Mix Asphalt), and it is usually applied using a free floating screed.
The material is applied in a freshly-mixed slurry, and worked mechanically to compact the interior and force some of the thinner cement slurry to the surface to produce a smoother, denser surface free from honeycombing.

Where screeds are, or have to be laid on a damp-proofing membrane or separating layer, the minimum thickness of the screed should be at least 50 mm.
Screeds should be laid in areas as large as possible in one operation, consistent with achieving acceptable surface regularity and the levels required, to minimise the number of joints.
Once the screed has been compacted it should be taken to the correct level with a screed board riding on the screed strips or battens (or side forms in the case of monolithic screeds).

Floating is the first step in the finishing of concrete and is done immediately after screeding.
To use a bull float, push it across the surface with the front edge raised a bit; when pulling it back, lay the blade flat to cut off bumps and fill any tiny holes.
Caution: After the first floating, do not do anything else until the water sheen is gone from the surface of the concrete.

 Section 9 - 2005 Online QMS Manual
The paver screed is a free floating unit that strikes off, partially compacts, and irons the surface of the mat as it is pulled forward by the tractor unit.
This allows the screed to "float", dependent upon the forces acting on the screed as it is being pulled forward by the tractor unit.
Once the screed is nulled out, it is good practice to increase the angle of attack by turning each depth screw handle approximately one full turn (depending on the make of paver) from the nulled out position of the screed and start paving, checking and adjusting until proper mat depth is obtained.

 Construction - Laydown
Because the screed elevation responds slowly to changes in screed angle, the paver naturally places a thinner mat over high points in the existing surface and a thicker mat over low points in the existing surface (TRB, 2000).
Screed angle can also be adjusted manually by using a thickness control screw or depth crank.
Figure 6 shows that it typically takes five tow lengths (the length between the tow point and the screed) after a desired level is input for a screed to arrive at the new level.

RECYCLING AS A LIFE-EXTENDING MAINTENANCE TACTIC
The screeds are usually heated, with vibratory or tamping bar designs for initial compaction and with automatic grade and slope control.
In single-pass repaving, the last unit in the HIR train uses one screed to place the recycled mix and a second to place the HMA mix; both layers are then compacted as one.
In the multiple-pass method, the last unit in the train has a single screed that places the recycled mix while a conventional HMA paver follows immediately behind to place and screed the virgin hot-mix asphalt layer on the recycled mix; both layers are compacted as one.

Bull floats come in several sizes and shapes and are made from magnesium or aluminum.
Sometimes when the concrete is too high or too low in small areas, you can "juke" the bull float back and forth quickly, an inch or so at a time, to make the concrete more liquid and cause it to move toward low areas.

The automatic screed controls operate on the principle that if the screed is made to follow a smooth line regardless of irregularities in the surface being paved, a smooth pavement grade will result.
The command panel, the grade sensor, and the pendulum feed electric impulses to a control box which activates the motors or cylinders to change the relative elevation of the screed arm pull points, thereby changing the screed tilt (angle of attack) and automatically compensating for road surface irregularities.
The automatic screed controls get information from a sensing device riding on either an erected stringline that has been set as the grade reference, from a mobile reference device capable of averaging the grade over a minimum 30 foot (9 meters) distance, a joint matching device or some combination of these.
