Mclane & Wong - Articles: Free Goods
Many labels will wrongly lump the free goods in with the real returns, and then subtract the full returns from the total records sold, which is what the royalty is based upon.
Since the free goods were never "sold" by the label in the first place, is unfair to deduct them later.
Since the number of free goods given away can substantially lower the royalty payable to the artist, the artist needs to be keenly aware of a label's policy and make sure this area is well defined in the contract.

Paying the Price for Free Goods.
Free goods abound in our economy, and most of us can’t wipe the smiles off of our faces as we enjoy them.
For we’ve grown accustomed to things we clearly value being made available for free for so long that we think of it as a birth right.
With the exception of a handful of toll roads, we drive for free in America.

Good (economics and accounting) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A good that cannot be used by consumers directly, such as an office building or capital equipment, can also be referred to as a good as an indirect source of utility through resale value or as a source of income.
A good is an object whose consumption increases the utility of the consumer, for which the quantity demanded exceeds the quantity supplied at zero price.
Ultimately, whether an object is a good or a bad depends on each individual consumer, and therefore, it is important to realize that not all goods are good all the time, and not all goods are goods to all people.

Letter Re: Free Computers, Facsimile Machines and Other Goods
This letter is in response to your letter of April 3, 1997, concerning the provision of certain free goods and services.
In contrast, sometimes the computer that is given away is a regular personal computer, which the physician is free to use for a variety of purposes in addition to receiving test results.
However, in determining whether a free or "loaner" computer or fax machine constitutes illegal remuneration, the substance -- not the form -- of the transaction controls and any reasonably foreseeable "misuse" of the equipment implicates the entity providing the equipment as well as the user.

Free good - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The free good is a term used in economics to describe a good that is not scarce.
A free good is available in as great a quantity as desired with zero opportunity cost to society.
Although these goods are free goods (in the economic sense) once they have been produced, they do require scarce resources, such as skilled manpower, to create them in the first place.

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT FACT SHEETS - 3.2.1. Free movement of goods
The free movement of goods originated in the Member States, or originated in third countries which are in free circulation in the Member States, is one of the fundamental principles of the Treaty (Article 23, second subparagraph EC Treaty).
At the beginning, free movement of goods was seen as part of a customs union between the Member States, involving the abolition of customs duties, quantitative restrictions on trade and equivalent measures, and the establishment of a common external tariff for the Community.
Later on, the emphasis was laid down on eliminating all remaining obstacles to free movement with the aim to create the internal market — an area without internal frontiers, in which goods (among other things) could move as freely as on a national market (*3.1.0.

From Revolution to Reconstruction: Presidents: Thomas Jefferson: Letters: "FREE SHIPS MAKE FREE GOODS"
In the instructions of 1784, given by Congress to their ministers appointed to treat with the nations of Europe generally, the same principle, and the doing away contraband of war, were enjoined, and were acceded to in the treaty signed with Portugal.
In the late treaty with England, indeed, that power perseveringly refused the principle of free bottoms, free goods; and it was avoided in the late treaty with Prussia, at the instance of our then administration, lest it should seem to take side in a question then threatening decision by the sword.
We denied his position, and appealed to the universal practice of Europe, in proof that the principle of "free bottoms, free goods," was not acknowledged as of the natural law of nations, but only of it's conventional law.

Network Effects and the Impact of Free Goods:
Seeding the market with free goods creates additional benefits to the firm by reducing stranding concerns by lowering quality uncertainty (Rogers, 1995) and in generating switching costs that lock in an installed base (Nilssen, 1992).
Free software is most likely to be deployed in cases where the future value to a firm that is derived from consumer adoption of complementary goods or services, or migration to the supported standard, is greater than the future value that could be derived from the sale of such goods at a fair market value.
Thus, it is proposed that the arrival of a well-known challenger providing free goods will act as a catalyst for the vicious cycle, weakening the positive relationship between price and installed base and hastening the decline of market prices.

The Case for Unilateral Free Trade and Open Immigration
And it is this principle — the principle of free trade and open immigration within the fifty states — that is one of the major reasons that the American people have — and have had — the highest standard of living in history.
And the same principle applies internationally — when people are free to trade and travel — whether it is with people of another state, another city, or another nation — they are able to improve their standards of living.
The ultimate argument against trade and immigration controls, however, lies not in economic terms — that is, that free trade and open immigration result in higher standards of living.
