Ranging through dozens of different information sources, the searcher often encounters conflicting and confusing command structures.
Just as some gourmets prefer free range chickens to their plump cousins, the theme of this article is the value of raising children to think, explore and make meaning for themselves.

 Why Vegan -- Free Range
Free range farms vary greatly -- there are no legal standards.
The only way to know for sure how the animals are being raised is to go to the farm, and to witness how the animal is slaughtered.
Although free-range conditions may be an improvement over factory-farm conditions, they are by no means free of suffering.

Compassion Over Killing > How Free Is “Free-Range”?
Whether kept in sheds or cages, laying hens-who can naturally live more than ten years-are considered "spent" when they are just one or two years old and their productivity wanes.
Rather than being retired, "free range" hens are slaughtered to make room for another shed of birds.
No other criteria-such as the size of the range or the amount of space given to each animal-are required before beef, lamb, and pork can be called "free-range." "Free-range" and "free-roaming" facilities are rarely inspected or verified to be in compliance with these two criteria.

Many farmers raised 10,000-20,000 birds per year on short-grass pasture ("range"), both chickens and turkeys.
With the rise of industrial agriculture and the development of the confinement broiler barn, this sustainable and profitable system was discontinued by means of withdrawing growers contracts.

A recent refinement of the Chicken Tractor is the addition of a pop-hole door to allow the birds to range at least part of the day.
Some farmers using the latter two systems advertise their chickens as “free-range”, but under European rules they would not qualify as the birds are too tightly confined.
Since, at the present time, there is no national standard for what "free-range" is in the U.S., I recommend that farmers follow the European standard that mandates stocking rates of 400 chickens or 100 turkeys per acre and that the birds truly are "free to range".

We’re encouraged to dye our hair, deprive ourseles of food when we’re hungry, paint a more pleasing face over our natural faces, and, if we are seen as structurally deficient, to undergo painful and dangerous surgery.

That creates stress in the commercial chickens that can lead to disease (driving, in part, their need for extensive antibiotics) and "stunted" meat devoid of taste and total health value (driving the need for chemicals that create an artificial moisture in the meat).
These organic chickens, though, have plenty of room to roam and eat their entirely natural diets and grow and live free of stress.
Another crucial reason this free-ranged organic chicken is an exceptional source of protein in your diet is because it is free of antibiotics.
