REED - LoveToKnow Article on REED
The double reed is common to the members of the oboe family, consisting, besides the oboe, of the cor anglais or tenor, of the fagotto or bassoon, and of the contra fagotto or double bassoon.
The single reed is common to all the members of the clarinet family, consisting, besides the clarinet, of the basset-horn or tenor, and of the bass and pedal clarinets; of the batyphone, an early bass clarinet, and of the saxophone, a metal oboe with a beating reed instead of a double reed.
The double reed adapted to a conical tube confers upon the latter the acoustic properties of the open pipe, whose wave-length is equal to that of the tube and which is capable of overblowing the octave and successive harmonics (theoretically).

FREE REED VIBRATOR - LoveToKnow Article on FREE REED VIBRATOR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
It must be borne in mind that the periodic vibrations of the reed determine the pitch of the sound solely by the frequency per second they impose upon the pulses of rarefuction and condensation within the pipe.
The most valuable characteristic of the free reed is its power of producing all the delicate gradations of tone between forte and ~ piano by virtue of a law of acoustics T governing the vibration of free reeds, whereby increased pressure of wind pro- - -- volume of tone.
The arrangement of the free reed in an organ pipe is simple, and does not differ greatly from that of the beating reed shown in fig.

Free reed aerophone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A free reed aerophone is a musical instrument where sound is produced as air flows past a vibrating reed in a frame.
In a free-reed instrument, it is the physical characteristics of the reed itself, such as mass, length, cross-sectional area and stiffness, that primarily determine the pitch (frequency) of the musical note produced.
Various free reed instruments appear to have been invented since antiquity, and are depicted in literature from Greece and Egypt.

The reed is fixed in a close-fitting frame, so that the vibrations cause rapid, (Click link for more info and facts about periodic) periodic interruptions of the air flow.
In a free-reed instrument, it is the physical characteristics of the reed itself, such as mass, length, cross-sectional area and stiffness, that primarily determine the pitch ((The number of occurrences within a given time period (usually 1 second)) frequency) of the musical note produced.
This contrasts with the situation in fixed reed instruments where the pitch is primarily determined by the length of the column of air which vibrates in sympathy with the reed.

The acoustics of the Asian free red mouth organs
The sheng employs a free reed at one end of a closed tube with a conical-cylindrical cross section.
Unlike the free reeds found in Western instruments such as the reed organ, accordion, and harmonica, the reeds of the Asian free reed mouth organs are not only coupled to pipe resonators, but are approximately symmetric, so that the same reed can operate on both vacuum and pressure (inhaling and exhaling).
The free reeds coupled to pipe resonators in the instruments under consideration seem to behave as "opening" or "outward striking" reeds as discussed by Fletcher [6], with the sounding frequency of the reed-pipe combination is above the natural frequencies of both the reed and the pipe.

Accordion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The reed is fitted inside a holder plate, and as air is drawn through the hole in the holder, the reed vibrates, producing sound.
Reed tone pitch is given by the reed itself and not through a resonator tube (as opposed to woodwind instruments)
The pitch of the note is determined by the length and thickness of the reeds, reduction of the length tending to sharpen the note, while reduction of the thickness lowers it.

 Free Reed Instrument Care
Concertina reeds are not waxed in, but with older concertinas the likely result of great heat is a crack in the wooden plate where the pads rest, which will cause leaks, and is hard to mend easily.
The clearance between the reed and the frame which holds it is very small, and a speck of dust will often lodge between the reed and frame causing it to stop up altogether, or maybe make buzzing or rattling noises.
Reed tuning and adjustment is a very skilled job, and unless you really know your stuff, we recommend leaving all other reed work to the professionals.

 EASTERN FREE REED INSTRUMENTS
Some free reed pipes, such as the well-known Chinese bawu and the somewhat lesser known Vietnamese ala, are transverse or side-blown instruments.
Often free reed pipes are given a gourd windchest, with the neck of the gourd being used as a mouthpiece.
As free reeds cannot be overblown in the same way as flutes or the more common woodwind reeds, they tend to have a very limited range, rarely much more than an octave and often less.

 WHAT IS A FREE REED?
In contrast a free reed is a small strip of material (most commonly of metal, but in some cases made of plastic or vegetable matter such as bamboo) also fixed at one end, but which is set in or over a slot that is fractionally wider than the reed itself.
This type of free reed needs to be connected to an appropriate resonator in order to sound and the pitch produced is dependent upon both the natural pitch of the reed and the size and shape of the resonating chamber.
The pitch of the note produced by this type of free reed is usually very close to the natural pitch of the reed and any resonating chamber attached to it normally tends to have only a very small effect on the pitch, although it can substantially modify the timbre of the sound produced.

The Asian Free Reed   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The principle of the free reed appears to have had its inception in Asia and after spreading there was subsequently introduced into with West where it developed into such instruments as the harmonica, the accordion, the harmonium and the free reed organ.
Instruments of this type are based on the principle of a free vibrating reed, unlike the single beating reed of the clarinet or saxophone, and likewise unlike the double reed instruments like the Western oboe, or the Indian shahnai and Chinese sona.
The Chinese written character for the mouth harp, jaw's harp or guimbarde is the same character for tongue and the character used to describe the actual reed used in the Chinese mouth organ, sheng, known in Japan as sho.

The reeds of woodwind musical instruments are usually made of Arundo donax; tuned reeds are made of metal or plastic.
There are several types of reeds: double reeds used on the bassoon, oboe, bagpipes, tromboon, english horn, and some organs and single reeds used on the clarinet and saxophone.
For a single reed, a complex shape must be cut from a cane 'blank': flat on the underside; thin and flat at the tip; blended to match the natural curve of the outer surface of the cane at the 'heel' of the reed.

As opposed to striking-reed pipes (bound- or beating-reed pipes) the reed in free-reed pipes does not beat against the shallot, an orifice in the reed, when it is played.
Instead it swings freely through a perforated rectangular plate of brass, like in reed organs or accordions.

The back issues of this charming magazine (still available) now give today's enthusiasts a great flavour of the keenness and enthusiasm that marked the early days of the concertina and folk-music revival in England.
Out of this 'readers only' Mail Order Records service sprang the Free Reed record label, launched in early 1976: The label, initially marketed only through the readership of Free Reed magazine, soon became a major British folk music record label, with a catalogue of over 30 releases by 1981.
