Free software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freedom from such restrictions is central to the concept of "free software", such that the opposite of free software is proprietary software, and not software which is sold for profit, such as commercial software.
Free software packages constitute a software ecosystem where software provides services, resulting in mutual benefit: for instance, the Apache web server handling the HTTP protocol, using mod_python to provide dynamic content.

The FSF definition of free software does not touch on the issue of price; a commonly used slogan is "free as in speech, not as in beer", and it is common to see CDs of free software such as Linux distributions for sale.
A large and increasing amount of software is made available under free software licenses; observers of this trend (and adherents) often refer to this phenomenon as the free software movement.
Since free software allows free use, modification, and distribution, it often finds a home in third world countries for whom the cost of proprietary software is sometimes prohibitive.

Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software.
Software developers do not have the power to eliminate or override these restrictions, but what they can and must do is refuse to impose them as conditions of use of the program.
To decide whether a specific software license qualifies as a free software license, we judge it based on these criteria to determine whether it fits their spirit as well as the precise words.

Free software has existed since the dawn of computing; Free Software as a movement began in 1984 with the GNU Project.

Debian -- What Does Free Mean?
Software that is free only in the sense that you don't need to pay to use it is hardly free at all.
Software companies are looking to protect their assets so they only release compiled code (which isn't human readable) and put many restrictions on the use of the software.
While free software is not totally free of constraints (only putting something in the public domain does that) it gives the user the flexibility to do what they need in order to get work done.

The Free Software movement and the Open Source movement are today separate movements with different views and goals, although we can and do work together on some practical projects.
The official definition of ``open source software,'' as published by the Open Source Initiative, is very close to our definition of free software; however, it is a little looser in some respects, and they have accepted a few licenses that we consider unacceptably restrictive of the users.

If the software is modified by someone else and passed on, we want its recipients to know that what they have is not the original, so that any problems introduced by others will not reflect on the original authors' reputations.
Many people have made generous contributions to the wide range of software distributed through that system in reliance on consistent application of that system; it is up to the author/donor to decide if he or she is willing to distribute software through any other system and a licensee cannot impose that choice.

The term "Free software" (as used in OSS/FS literature) is based on the word "freedom" (the word "libre" is used in some other languages).

 Setting Up Shop
The word "free" has traditionally led commercial software vendors to think "no revenue," and customers of those companies to think "no support;" thus free software was assumed to be irrelevant to the commercial world, with free software developers often cast as idealistic and naive.
Part of the reason lies in the origins of free software as a concept; charging for software licenses was (and is) seen by many as antithetical to the interests of users (who would be better off if provided free and unrestricted use of software) and to society as a whole.
This is the original free software business model advocated by Richard Stallman in the GNU Manifesto and first implemented by Cygnus Solutions, a for-profit company formed to provide support services for GNU tools (most notably the GNU compilers).

The first such software was created by Ward Cunningham in 1994, but given the relative simplicity of the wiki concept, a large number of implementations now exist, ranging from very simple "hacks" implementing only core functionality to highly sophisticated content management systems.
The term "wiki software" could be interpreted as comprising all of the software required to run a wiki, which might include a web server such as Apache, in addition to the "Wiki engine" itself, which implements the wiki technology.
Modelled on Wiki, it is free software released under the MIT license.

Why Open Source Software / Free Software (OSS/FS, FOSS, or FLOSS)? Look at the Numbers!
Note that those who use the term “open source software” tend to emphasize technical advantages of such software (such as better reliability and security), while those who use the term “Free Software” tend to emphasize freedom from control by another and/or ethical issues.
Software that cannot be modified and redistributed without further limitation, but whose source code is visible (e.g., “source viewable” or “open box” software, including “shared source” and “community” licenses), is not considered here since such software don’t meet the definition of OSS/FS.
As the declaration Free Software Leaders Stand Together states, the business model of OSS/FS “is to reduce the cost of software development and maintenance by distributing it among many collaborators”.
