Free trade zone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A free trade zone (FTZ) or export processing zone is one or more areas of a country where tariffs and quotas are eliminated and bureaucratic requirements are lowered in order to attract companies by raising the incentives for doing business there.
They are special zones where (some) normal trade barriers such as import or export tariffs do not apply, bureaucracy is typically minimized by outsourcing it to the FTZ operator and corporations setting up in the zone may be given tax breaks as an additional incentive.
Usually, these zones are set up in underdeveloped parts of the host country, the rationale being that the zones will attract employers and thus reduce poverty and unemployment and stimulate the area's economy.

LAII: Prospects For Free Zones Under FTAA
Another reason why free trade zones could be strategically important for Latin American countries is that they are countries well known for frequent changes in economic and administrative regulations, consequently making the economic climate very uncertain and risky from a foreign investor's point of view.
The role of free trade zones in South America is to provide a bureaucracy-free environment, free trade conditions (duty free machinery, equipment and materials) and stability of the "rules of the game" for investors (both local and foreign) who want to process raw materials for export.
Even though international experience shows some unsuccessful free trade zones (especially when the location was poor and the legislation non-competitive) in most cases free trade zones have been successful in reaching the goals set at their creation.

No-union zones are created within free-trade zones, which is basically creating a lawless territory within a nation-state, so when companies turn round and say, "You're trying to infringe on the sovereign territory of these nations," it's pretty ironic, because this whole model of development is based on changing sovereign laws of countries.

Free trade, usually defined as the absence of tariffs, quotas, or other governmental impediments to international trade, allows each country to specialize in the goods that it can produce cheaply and efficiently relative to other countries.
While virtually all economists think free trade is desirable, they differ on how best to make the transition from tariffs and quotas to free trade.
That is because groups that otherwise would be opposed or indifferent to trade reform might join the campaign for free trade if they see opportunities for exporting to the other countries in the trade agreement.

Blogcritics.org: Attention all Aussies: Free trade benefits everyone!
Today, "free trade" is really "Faux Free Trade," simply sheep's clothing to mask the actions of predatory multinationals which do not have the best interests of the American public at heart.
The spinners drag in the red herring of "Free Trade", but real free trade is based on David Ricardo's Theory of Comparative Advantage and that rests on "the key assumption of factor immobility." Labor and capital are assumed perfectly mobile within an exporting country, but must stay within that country.
The basic fallacy in their claims is that the concept of real Free Trade was predicated on "the immobility of factors of production." That's mildly exotic, but it just means that labor and capital (including profits) must remain within their respective trading countries.
