FreeDOS is an effort to create a free DOS Operating System, which is compatible with MS-DOS applications and drivers, yet have some features that are missing in MS-DOS.
FreeDOS can also be used with a driver called DOSLFN which supports long file names (see VFAT), but most FreeDOS programs do NOT support long file names even if the driver is loaded.
FreeDOS was set up to provide an alternative to MS-DOS when Microsoft announced in 1994 that they were going to discontinue the sale and support of MS-DOS.

Disks are available for download as ready to write disk images, zipped (for smaller download and for those that have problems downloading the raw binary files), and for the 1.44MB one as a self writing executable (should work under DOS as its a DOS.exe, but I only tested under Win2k).
You may want to visit the FreeDOS developer page at SourceForge to get the source for the kernel, FreeCOM, and Install program.

Recent rumors on the internet that the FreeDOS project is dead were infirmed by the same person that launched them.
Jim Hall, the creator of the open source FreeDOS project, made a joke (as he claims) on the project’s old website announcing that the “FreeDOS is dead”, exactly on the project’s 12th anniversary.
Hall admitted he was feeling discouraged by the lack of recent progress on the project, but he felt encouraged by the renewed interest from developers and the reaction from the FreeDOS community.

The HP representative added that although the company is now installing FreeDOS on the machines, which run on AMD processors, it could change the operating system to Linux or other depending on market demand.
FreeDOS is much easier to support than a full fledged linux distribution, meaning the real cost would be much lower than just throwing on "free" linux.
This move should be met with a strong public demand to HP to revert this intolerable decision immediately, with a boycott of any further HP purchases in case they still won't change it.
