FreeGEM allows many of the GEM/1 features to be turned on and off selectively; so in this picture, there is a "Desk" menu on the left, rather than a "DESKTOP" menu on the right.
With these two screens, it is possible to make FreeGEM mimic the look of most previous GEM versions.
FreeGEM includes support for background images and colour icons; both of these features were part of the planned ViewMAX/3 desktop.

FreeGEM is the free software / open source version of Digital Research's GEM.
The FreeGEM development teams are working on making the DR GEM code more functional, and on providing programming support.

Hi all, Just a quick off topic email to let you all know that I've successfully installed FreeDOS with FreeGEM and 1stWord processor at my grandmothers house.
I set up her PC with my LiteOS distribution and she is now able to type me letters, store her recipies and even play a game or two..
I love being able to offer this software to people without the legal hangover of using a microsoft product, it may not be that flashy..

This software is available subject to the terms of the GNU General Public License unless other specified.

I have discovered a bug in the VDI which means that video drivers in GEMSYS.CFG with a number of 10 or higher don't work.

 GEM information archive : AES structures
The object type is a word, but the AES only uses the low 8 bits; the high 8 bits are available for use by the programmer.
To check for this feature, use appl_init() and check that bit 3 of xbuf.abilities is set.
Recent FreeGEM builds contain a system similar based on the GEM/5 one, but extended and backwards-compatible.

Here we are enthusiastic about developing software for GEM environments, such as FreeGEM and OpenGEM.
On this website the term GEM is used for brevity, but equally refers to FreeGEM, OpenGEM and any other derivative of the original GEM released by Digital Research, Inc. StoneyGEM only supports the Intel version of GEM.

My question, though, is that if you can't run ST stuff on it, then one might as well install OpenGEM or FreeGem on your PC.
It is open source and and what I know at this moment it runs under Linux, Windows, MacOS...
Not exactly, OpenGEM can run only PC compiled apps, with ARAnyM you can run original Atari applications (compiled for 68k not for ix86).

It was recognisable, but not something I would enjoy to hear on a regular basis.
On a related note, I notice that FreeGEM - the open source version of x86 GEM - has gained a MP3 and MIDI player.
I'm planning to install it on the 486/33Mhz 4Mb machine I was given.

The maxframe.com site also mentioned a GEM version "OPEN GEM 2.0", possibly related to "PC-GEM" or "FreeGEM", that is freely available; check the site for an FAQ (or check our GEM news here.) Some of the links there referred to DeltaSoft Web site but the date on that site is June 2001.
As of Jan 2005, there is a FreeGEM Web ring linking several sites.
As of Jan 2005: One site on the FreeGEM Ring is Dylan Harris' site, he a former GEM developer, of such products as the GEM Programmer's Workbench.

I noticed some old posts asking if FreeGEM was still going, and some answers suggesting that the project to expand the original GEM GUI was dead.
It's not at all dead, and recently we've released a lot of stuff.
Right now the major event with FreeGEM is the release of OpenGEM, a distribution that includes all the major parts of FreeGEM, and all the GEM applications in one tiny package.

If you want a fast GUI layer, put OpenGEM/FreeGEM on top of it.
That's what the OpenGEM and FreeGEM projects are there for.
A linux would be ok, but I think you would need to go with DSL.

 [fd-dev] FreeDOS installer ideas
I suggest using ncurses for designing the installer interface...
Owen Rudge is making an installer for SEAL with TUI and its own package formate (attached SPI.TXT) Maybe here are some people making also an installer or for an entire FreeDOS distro, or for some packages (such as FreeGEM, OpenGEM, SEAL, etc, etc)...
I think that all these people must contribute in making an only and official installer joining all of our efforts If any of you have an idea or want to contribute coding (this is the most needed, because ideas without coders are NOTHING), please reply to these message.

This was a 512k machine with *no* hard drive, successfully masquerading as a 386 with Win 3.1 to a fellow that worked as a home electronics salesman and another fellow that traded used pc's, neither of which was connected with the seller.
I *still* give diskettes with FreeGEM on them to people who have scrap pc's with blown hard drives or whatever.
I don't know any other windowing interface with a mouse and icons that will even work on those green monochrome monitors!
