FreeCell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the June 1968 edition of Scientific American Martin Gardner described in his "Mathematical Games" column, a game by C. Baker that is similar to FreeCell, except that cards on the tableau are built by suit rather than by alternate colors.
Cards can be safely moved to the foundations without a chance of being further used, if the value of the foundations of the different color are greater than the card face value minus 2, and the value of the other foundation of the same color is greater than the card face value minus 3.
A perfect FreeCell playing program running in polynomial time would earn the discoverer a $1,000,000 prize for solving one of the Clay Mathematics Institute's Millennium Prize problems.

Solitaire City : How to Play FreeCell Solitaire
FreeCell has become enormously popular after being bundled with all versions of Windows since 95, so I thought it was time Solitaire City had its own version.
FreeCell is an "open" solitaire meaning that all the cards are dealt face up at the start of the game and this lets you analyze the outcome of moves before you make them.
If you had four empty FreeCells and an empty tableau column then you would be able to move a sequence of ten cards rather than five, by moving the first five packed cards to the empty tableau column using the four FreeCells as temporary storage space as in the above example.

This solver was simply dubbed FreeCell Solver (which coupled with its many releases has the unfortunate effect of clogging the Google search for "freecell solver").

 FreeCell FAQ and links
FreeCell is an open solitaire, meaning that all of the cards are dealt out face-up at the start, and the effect of any series of moves can be worked out, without having to rely on judgement and probability as in games like Klondike.
With two freecells, the win rate is about 79% (at least 25,381 of the first 32,000 deals are solvable), and with one freecell, the win rate is slightly less than 20% (at least 6289 of the first 32,000 are solvable) -- thanks again to Danny A. Jones and his solver for these results.
With 36 freecells, a blocked position can be reached in which the bottom row consists of all of the aces and queens, and the second row all kings and twos (each king covering an ace and each two a queen), and the other 36 cards are in freecells.

This is one of the deals that requires all four freecells (it is not solvable with three), and it shows.
I've been a Freecell addict for several years now, and was looking for the "toughest" ones to solve.
The solution you give is rather inefficient at 65 moves, but this probably comes from relying on a solver (when I re-played it, I inadvertently made a slightly different move near the end which immediately shortened it by 4 moves).

Such deals when playing with four freecells are very few and far between, there being only a handful discovered in the first 30 million deals under the M/S Freecell dealing algorithm.
Its major disadvantage was a tendency to bog down to a very slow pace when it required the generation of more than a few hundred thousand positions in search of a verdict.
A preset is a series of arguments passed in the internal command line which specifies the method used by the solver, which includes the pattern by which it searches the move tree and also the sequence with which it tries various kinds of moves when working on any given position.
