FreeCiv is like the name suggests a free Civilization clone, it supports multiplayer games which can be played locally (on the same computer) or over a network.
Freeciv aims to be mostly rule-compatible with Sid Meier's Civilization II, but a few rules are different which makes for a better multi-player game, and there are lots and lots of adjustable parameters to make customizing games possible.
Note: FreeCiv requires an X windowing system, you can get one from StarNet, after 2 hours it times out though, so you'll need to purchase the full thing.

FreeCiv 2.0 was released this last week, running on Debian Linux, Windows XP, and Mac OSX, with ports coming for a wide array of other platforms.
FreeCiv may seem a bit behind the commercial version in terms of look and feel, but it has a much greater potential as a game platform.
Actually both freeciv and "Civilization" were preceded by multi-player open-source Unix games that embodied this "explore and conquer" game approach, though the earlier ones did not have the evolving technologies introduced by Civilization.

For freeciv stuff you would normally mail to me you should try mailing to Tony Stuckey or (appropriate in most cases) one of the mailing lists.
The public Freeciv gameserver, civserver.freeciv.org, will no longer run any 1.11.4 games, due to severe instability problems - nearly every game I played there would hang if one of the players had connection problems, and upon losing connection, reconnecting is often impossible.
All Freeciv players are urged to use a recent CVS version.

Freeciv is a great game, but smallpox simply took all the fun out of it for me. My latest obsession is Dance Dance Revolution, or DDR for short.
Freeciv is a slow game by nature, because it takes time to build a great civilization, and thus doesn't lend itself well to a quick pickup game.
I am by no means an expert in Freeciv gameplay, but I do feel very strongly that this is the way the game is supposed to be played.

While the individual who created the self-installation packages is a trusted member of the Freeciv community, who is using a freely available installer with all scripts available to look at, and others have virus scanned the executables and the files after unpacking, there is a.ZIP file available.
Andreas Kemnade has patched Freeciv to build with the Cygwin compilers (with -mno-cygwin which produces an executable that uses Microsoft's runtime instead of Cygwin's runtime) and use native windows for display (no need for an X Server!).
Freeciv was initially written for UNIX systems and uses X Window System primitives (via either the XAW or GTK Toolkits) to display the graphics.

Currently, FreeCiv looks similiar to Civ I (though graphics are better), follows almost the Civ II ruleset (though modifications were done if they were considered to be necessary) and provides of course multiplayer capabilities over the net.
FreeCiv is a turn based game, but all players play their turns parallel.
Whole FreeCiv sessions with people carrying their boxes from house to house in order to connect them are known, so be careful with this really addictive game.
