It also included terms that many programmers felt were unacceptable: no other similar database (such as freedb) could be accessed in addition to CDDB, and the CDDB logo was required to be displayed while the database was being accessed.
After the commercialization of CDDB as Gracenote, many media player applications switched to freedb, but continued to refer to the service as 'CDDB' as a generic term.

This is done by a client (a freedb aware application) which calculates a (nearly) unique disc ID for a CD in your CD-Rom and then queries the database.
Additionally to the general classification freedb supports a genre field in the database entries, which can be filled with any genre name.
Direct updates for the Windows format database are not possible, but that's no problem as you can use the freedb Updater (which is available on the ftp-servers) to update your Windows format database using the Unix format update files.

perl.com: Identifying Audio Files with MusicBrainz
FreeDB grew out of CDDB, which was designed around the task of identifying entire CDs, not merely single tracks, and that is still reflected in the way most of the modules work; they require you to either have or fake the CD's table of contents to get results.
In addition to taking the FreeDB data and making it available (in fact, the FreeDB changes appear to be regularly merged into MusicBrainz), MB takes care to make sure that their data is moderated regularly.
FreeDB's discid-based system didn't always make sure that different versions CDs were recognized as duplicates, for example, whereas the MB volunteers attempt to consolidate such data.

Foetusized's Article on CDDB, freedb, and CDValet
In response to this, Escient/Gracenote now has some competition: MusicBrainz (which has focused on the tagging of sound files such as MP3s), and freedb, which is an open-source "fork" of the original CDDB and is doing well.
Freedb also has a list of available software clients with support for most operating systems.
I found the solution on freedb's website; they have a page of patches for older CDDB software to fix them so they'll use the freedb database instead.

Eventually, it is hoped that MusicBrainz will take over from FreeDB as the preferred open-source free-database way to look up CDs, especially since Gracenote has since developed (and is forcing customers to switch to) CDDB2, a proprietary replacement for the original CDDB protocol.

I downloaded and tried about 5 cddb progs, and only Orange and another unnamed program made the cut, but even the Orange CDs interface is SO much cooler and neater, I chose to register the other one because the Freedb vs. the Gracenote cddb has no info.
I'm happy with Freedb - only about 30 CDs (most of them very rare classical music CDs) of my more than 900 CD collection were not in the database.
Therefore, I don't find the freedb vs. cddb thing to be a problem at all, IMHO.
