The award is for someone in the military or public safety field who puts his or her life on the line.
The award is presented to someone in the educational community who significantly contributes to shaping the character of youth.

The Freedom to Compete initiative is a national outreach, education and coalition-building campaign to emphasize the importance of providing free and unfettered access to employment opportunities for all individuals.
A recipient of the Freedom to Compete Award must be willing to participate in programs, meetings, or other collaborative efforts with the EEOC to publicize the award-winning effort and share information to assist other entities seeking to replicate the success achieved from the award-winning effort.
The awards are presented by the Chair and Commissioners during an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. This year's ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, June 14, 2006.

The awards are designed to honor two writers who have fought courageously in the face of adversity for the right to freedom of expression; however, in 1993, the Freedom to Write Committee broke with the tradition and decided to give three awards to three writers.
As NATO ground forces entered Kosovo, she was among hundreds of detainees transferred to a prison in Serbia, and on December 9 a Serbian court in Nis convicted her of "terrorist acts" against the Yugoslav state during the NATO air campaign in Kosovo and sentenced her to 12 years in prison.
His family used the award money to hire a local lawyer to challenge his detention, and he was released within three months of having received the award.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation hosted a "thank you" dinner party in La Crosse, Wis., on June 15, 2005, in honor of the many La Crosse-area residents who courageously signed on as plaintiffs to challenge a Ten Commandments monument in a public park in the Wisconsin town.
Plaintiffs attending the dinner party were surprised with a "Friend of Freedom" award, a replica of the Statue of Liberty, with their name inscribed on it.
As plaintiffs received their award, they all said something at the mike about the case.

Luis Alberto Perez Barillas won the 2003 International Press Freedom Award from the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) for his reporting on the alleged involvement of current senior government officials in the killings of 200,000 citizens between 1978 and 1984.
