World Press Freedom Day honours sacrifices around the world made for freedom of the press and reminds governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression that is enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993, the day is celebrated each year on May 3, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in 1991.
UNESCO marks World Press Freedom Day by conferring the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize on a deserving individual, organization or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger.

This revolutionary advance for religious freedom in 1786 set the stage for ratification of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1791 with its guarantee of “no establishment” and “free exercise” on the federal level.
But the same survey suggests that many Americans may have forgotten what Jefferson and Madison meant by “religious freedom.” Forty-nine percent of respondents said there was either no need for separation of church and state in the U.S. or that it should be less strictly interpreted.
Moreover, Madison contended, the fruits of ecclesiastical establishments throughout history have been “pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity, in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution.” Confusing government and religion, in other words, is also bad for religion.

NEW YORK -- Freedom of the press is in decline in the United States amid increased government secrecy and propaganda, say media veterans, analysts, and advocates.
The organization, in an annual survey released in advance of Tuesday's commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, said media in Finland, Iceland, and Sweden faced the fewest fetters in 2004 while the most restrictions were slapped on journalists in North Korea, Burma (also known as Myanmar), Cuba, and Turkmenistan.
Freedom House said the U.S. score declined in part because of ''a number of legal cases in which prosecutors sought to compel journalists to reveal sources or turn over notes or other material they had gathered in the course of investigations.''
