Kharkiv's Freedom Square (Ploshcha Svobody) is the largest city center square in Europe and second in the world to the Tiananmen Square in China.
Before the occupation, Kharkiv's tank industries were evacuated to the Urals with all their equipment, and became the heart of Red Army's tank programs (particularly, producing the legendary T-34 tank earlier designed in Kharkiv).
Kharkiv's passenger railway station was reconstructed and expanded in 1901, to be later destroyed in the Second World War.

This year Kharkiv was chosen because, as director of the festival Taras Melnyk explained, "Kharkiv is voting this year to make Russian the official city language." He said that in Kharkiv the Ukrainian language is practically not heard.
Teen-agers from the Kharkiv area, who were asked to volunteer as dance leaders for the final concerts on Freedom Square, added to the air of festivity.

A special congress of concerned government officials from the eastern regions of Ukraine met in Siverodonetsk on November 27 and resolved to hold a referendum on the matter of separation from Ukraine on December 5.
Meanwhile, Kharkiv Oblast Chairman Yevhen Kushnariov, who had initiated the call for separatism with a fiery speech on November 26 to the Kharkiv Oblast Council, which then gave him extraordinary powers, began a pacification movement on December 1 to bring the two sides in the conflict together.
He visited the two opposing camps of demonstrators on Kharkiv's Freedom Square - one of the largest plazas in the world - and met with representatives of the tens of thousands of protesters on both sides to ask them to work toward reconciliation.

During the rally it was announced that the Kharkiv city prosecutor's office has initiated criminal action regarding the decision of the Kharkiv Regional Council.
Hearing a person of his fame break into the chant "we are many and we won't be defeated" had a shocking effect on the majority of Kharkiv residents - of a very positive kind.

A patchwork of 350 three-foot square fabric panels creating an enormous American flag with giant stars and stripes, the quilt will serve as a tribute to the values that terrorists attempted to destroy last year.
