  Lancaster County Historical Society
When Lancaster County was established on May 10, 1729, it became the prototype for the sixty-three counties to follow.
With the establishment of Dauphin County in 1785, Lancaster County was cut down to its present size (945 square miles) except for a tiny sliver of land given up when Lebanon County was formed in 1813.
The increasing population and economic growth of Lancaster County in the decades prior to the Revolution attracted numerous professionals and businessmen.

Campbell has been born one child, Gracie T., farmer, P. Clyde, Sandusky County, was born in Adams Township, this county, June 7, 1857, and is a son of Josiah and Harriet (Beymer) Crockett, who came to Ohio with their parents and to this county in an early day.
Township, this county; served two terms in the village council; served six years as a member of the school board, two years as the treasurer, and one year as the president of the board.
The subject of this sketch was reared in Thompson Township, as a farmer, and was married, in 1865, to Sophronia Gambee of Reed Township, this county, born May 25, 1844, a daughter of Solomon and Mary Gambee, also of Reed Township, where they were early settlers, having come from New York State.

Two disputed settlements in Adams County were "Digges Choice", in the vicinity of Littlestown and Hanover, and "Carroll's Delight," in the vicinity of Fairfield and Hamiltonban.
In 1739-40, the Penn brothers laid out, in what is now Adams County, Pennsylvania, a reservation for themselves and family of 43,500 acres which was called "The Manor of the Masque." They ordered all settlers to be removed from this tract, but the Scotch-Irish who had settled there refused to leave.
James Hamilton was a member of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly for 6 terms beginning in 1734, Mayor of Philadelphia in 1745 and Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania from 1748 to 1754 and from 1759 to 1763.

He is dark color, five feet five inches high between twenty five and thirty years of age-bends forward in walking-has a large scar on the inside of his right wrist- A warrant for his removal was therefore granted to said owner conformably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided.
Warrant to ask constable to apprehend a pair of slaves on the ask of Nimrod Owings of the county of Frederick in the state of Maryland, who is the owner of the said slaves.

Blachart came from Pennsylvania to Illinois, with her family, in 1856, and removed from Illinois to Adams in 1870.
He was born in Switzerland county Indiana, March 18, 1831 and at the age ten the family went down the Ohio by boat built by his father, to Reno where the family located, and where he grew to manhood.
He was one of the pioneer settlers of Page county, having settled on a farm a few miles west of Coin in 1886 where he remained until 1886 when he removed to Shenandoah where he engaged in the implement business for a number of years.

Webster Lewis in Lewisberry, York County, later moved to Tioga where he practiced law and was elected a state representative.
Garrison and Frederick Douglass came to Harrisburg on August 7, 1847 at the invitation of William W. Rutherford to deliver an anti-slavery lecture at the county courthouse, but were met by a hostile white crowd that threw rotten eggs and stones.
