Cruise Critic Features: A Closer Look: Freedom of the Seas
On April 7, 2006, when this photo was snapped, Freedom of the Seas was indeed just six days from its departure from Aker Finnyards in snowy Turku, Finland.
This ship, and another duo of relatively identical siblings to be launched in 2007 and 2008, is an extension of the cruise line's existing Voyager class of vessels (such as Voyager of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas).
The reason that Freedom of the Seas' move from dry dock to wet dock is such a milestone is that, until a ship floats, it's not significantly different from any land construction project.

Navis.gr - Freedom of the Seas
During the Middle Ages, freedom of navigation on the high seas was curtailed by maritime powers that asserted territorial sovereignty over various bodies of water.
The legal basis for claims of territorial sovereignty over the high seas was dealt a severe blow by the Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius, regarded as the father of international law.
Grotius, on the basis of Roman legal principle, contended in his Mare Liberum (Free Sea, 1609) that the seas cannot constitute property because they cannot be occupied in the sense in which land can be occupied and that they are therefore free to all nations and subject to none.

The Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius wrote a defence of the freedom of the seas, Mare Liberum, in 1609.

Welwod used Scripture to argue that in some cases the sea could be occupied and that exclusive national rights over territorial waters could be claimed.
