 Freedom of religion
'''Freedom of religion''' is the individual's right or freedom to hold whatever religious beliefs he or she wishes, or none at all.
This freedom extends mere freedom of thought by adding the freedom of worship and the freedom of religious congregation, and became regarded in the 20th century as one of the basic human rights.
Freedom of worship, on the other hand, involves matters of action; freedom of worship is usually present alongside that of worship, except when a significant conflict arises between people.

 'Form and Freedom in Worship'
In this matter of worship we live in the church amid circumstances which could hardly be more like those which faced Israel as she entered the promised land.
The worship which God desired that his people give to him was not to be, was forbidden to be a mere performance, a going through of motions, a series of acts done in a spirit of mere duty or obligation, without the heart and without enthusiasm.
And, contrarily, worship which was joyless, sacrifices and offerings without joy and gladness of heart, must be insincere, must be given without a true appreciation of what they mean and how much they mean and how glorious is the salvation which they were intended to depict and represent and illustrate.

The Catholic Church naturally has the right to preach Christ's Gospel to every creature by speech and by writing, and she has the right freely to worship God.
But such freedom of worship is not unlimited, and the most tolerant gov- ernments have from "time to time suppressed practises indulged in under the name of religion.
It is difficult for us now to see the justification of such measures, but it is probably true that at one time in Europe to have had any large number of Protestants in a Catholic country, or vice versa, would have endangered the civil peace.
