Underneath the trappings of a police procedural, Freedomland opens a gateway to the simmering cauldron of racial/social inequality that exists across the urban landscape of this country, where people are treated differently because of the color of their skin or their lack of spending clout.

From that feeble romance and "Freedomland," along with Roth's earlier stabs at directing ("Coupe de Ville," "Streets of Gold," "Revenge of the Nerds II"), it's clear Roth's talents are best put to use behind a desk rather than behind a camera.

The complication in Freedomland arises out of Brenda's hysteria, which is so extreme that we doubt her story even before we've bought into it, and from the movie's dogged, booby-trapped demonstration of the sins of racism.
Julianne Moore, pale and dissolute, with pink-rimmed eyes and stringy hair that falls into her face, does a scrupulous job of playing a forlorn, broken-down mother, a woman who claims so feverishly not to be a drug addict that we sit back and wait for the story of how she bottomed out on drugs.

 'Freedomland' - Zap2it
In green-lighting a movie of "Freedomland," Richard Price's racially fraught police procedural about a missing child, a distraught mother and the veteran detective trying to piece together the truth, the head of Revolution Studios made one catastrophic mistake: He let Joe Roth direct it.
This is not entirely surprising, since Joe Roth is the head of Revolution Studios, as well as the occasional director of such lightweight entertainments as "Coupe de Ville," "America's Sweethearts" and "Christmas with the Kranks." On the evidence of "Freedomland," he should never be trusted with anything more substantial, ever again.
It doesn't work as a thriller, or a police procedural, or a drama, or even as a commentary on the way America's fl population is almost reflexively cast as predators, or worse, by whites.

It's not enough for director Joe Roth to take on motherhood, race relations, police ethics and infidelity, but he also tries to explore the meaning of life, although not in that amusing, Monty Python kind of way.
