Freefly is a skydiving discipline which began circa 1986 by a group of skydivers who wanted to experiment with non-traditional forms of flight.
Freeflying is an expansion of skydiving which includes the traditional belly-to-earth positions, but extends into vertical flight where the flyer is in an upright position (falling feet first) or in an inverted position (falling head first).
Freeflying is truly a three-dimensional art form that is constantly evolving and improving with its growth.

Since most parachutes are not designed to be opened at speeds higher than that of normal belly flying, freeflyers must transition back to the "belly to earth" position and slow down their descent for several seconds before deploying their parachute.

 What is Freeflying?
Freeflying is a skydive made using any or any combination of the three flying axises (roll, pitch, and yaw).
For example, a freeflier might dive straight, head-down to the earth using legs and arms to adjust orientation and speed and to remain stable.
Freefliers may exceed this rate, but generally only by making a special effort to streamline both their body and their equipment, or by jumping from a higher altitude.

Whether you are interested in freeflying as a main discipline, or you only want to make the occasional "fun jump", you will still want to follow the best and safest learning progression.
When you start to jump with other freeflyers, you have a lot more to think about, including where the other jumpers in your group are at all times.
This is important as when you are learning to freefly it can be difficult to see your visual altimeter and it is easy to forget that you will be falling much faster than you would be if belly flying.

 ESPN.com - EXTREME - Should freeflying be part of X Games 2001?
According to the SSI Pro Skysurfing & Freeflying tour, freeflying is a team parachuting discipline consisting of three athletes; two freeflyers and a cameraflyer.
The freefly team's performance is judged for the first 40 seconds of their 40-60 second freefall that begins at 13,000 feet.
Most freefly teams average rate of descent is up to 50% faster than skysurfing, often in the 160-180 mph range, but can reach peak speeds of over 250 mph, making freeflying the fastest human team sport in the world.

Freeflying is the latest concept in skydiving which is proving popular with experienced and novice jumpers.
In freeflying anything goes; flying positions are not rigid and the emphasis is more on fun than difficulty - although these positions are not easy!
In order to demonstrate this head-down style of flying Adrian often flies in an old balloon suit to allow his speed to drop to that of a belly or sit flyer.

 Longhorn Skydivers
So, instead of a bunch of focused, organized, skydivers forming complex formations while moving at around 120 mph in a very stable body position, freeflyers are generally a laid-back group of punks hooked on the thrill of moving at speeds of up to 180 mph in inherantly unstable body postitions.
Freeflying came about when an eclectic group of jumpers realized that there was no good reason to limit their flying to just one plane.
One of the things that makes freeflying very difficult is that an improper body position will cause a jumper to tumble out of their stance and slow down relative to the other jumpers.

 How to learn FreeFlying
A FreeFlyer - in the original sense - is a Skydiver who is in (perfect) control of his/her aerodynamics, the airflow around the body, the different low and high pressure areas that make the movement — the flight — possible while being able to move freely through the atmosphere.
With this understading and some talent a FreeFlyer will, with some taining, be able to express his / her own creativity in flight and will discover and feel the real joy FreeFly gives you.
Moreover the FreeFlyer will understand better, will progress in being able to think consiously while flying and therefore find the “flow” in the air instead of fighting it.

Tracking dives are often planned at the end of the day on the sunset load, and with less emphasis on quantitative results (formation skydiving) or on holding difficult and new body positions (freeflying); they are commonly viewed as the most relaxing, low pressure jumps.

I was wondering how many people agreed with me that airships in FF should go back to the way they used to be where the player controls the airship on the world map and not the way it has been since FF X, where you pick your destination on a map.
While the freeflying usually leads to less realism in the world map, I greatly prefer it over picking a location on a map.
I like freeflying, but I have also liked how the world is "large" as in no world map.

I have nothing against freeflying (as I eagerly try to increase my own freefly skills), but I do think it is a bad idea for AFF graduates to jump straight into freeflying without spending 50-100 jumps learning how to do relative work on their belly.
I know many skydivers these days eventually choose freeflying as their favorite type of skydiving, but I believe some graduates are missing an important step that I’m sure 99 percent of today’s best freeflyers learned how to do at least decently first, and that’s relative work on their belly.
An AFF graduate has a higher opportunity for learning relative work skills on his or her belly due to the lower speeds and increased ease of initial stability.
