Freeheat was formed at the end of the 20th century, consisting of four members - Jim Reid (vocals and guitar) was a founding member of The Jesus & Mary Chain and remained in that group until their chaotic demise in 1998 after which the Mary Chain's Reid brothers went their separate ways.
Freeheat debuted on disc with 2000's Dont Worry Be Happy EP (Hall Of Records, USA), followed in 2002 with the The Retox EP (Outafocus Recordings, UK).
Freeheat's long awaited LP "Back On The Water" was officially released in North America on June 13, 2006 via US indie label Planting Seeds Records.

Freeheat haven't played in the UK for about a year, and there's a lot of interest and expectation surrounding tonight's gig at The Water Rats.
Freeheat, it would seem, is a chance for Ben, Jim et al to return to their first love, making guitar pop songs, without the music industry machine's hyperbole.
But for Freeheat their primary concern is the music, the gig, the songs, the bringing of these elements together in one place and at one time.

 Freeheat - PopMatters Concert Review
Despite periodic injections of techno beats and dark, acoustic tinges, one aspect of the JAMC's equation remained constant: their ongoing, perverse attachment to the culture of pop, to which they returned time and again in numerous trademark guitar- and ennui-driven warpings of the sound of bubblegum rock.
Although Freeheat is a more raw and stripped-down affair than the JAMC, it still vouches for Jim Reid's well-deserved status — alongside his brother — among the architects of the guitar noise genre.
Admittedly, something of the attitude of the JAMC was lacking from Freeheat's performance and things did begin to go awry around the mid-point of the set, as minor technical and guitar-tuning problems conspired to undermine much of the intensity that had been built up.

FreeHeat only heats the pool when the AC system is running every day, which is about six months a year in Houston.
FreeHeat saves you money two ways: first, by being more efficient then any air cooled unit on the market, and second by heating your pool for free instead of wasting the heat into the air.
The FreeHeat system makes the average yearly cost even cheaper, because you get free heating when the AC is running in the spring, summer and fall.

 Record Reviews:
Freeheat, for those of you who were looking the other way, were Jim Reid and Ben Lurie’s ramshackle post Jesus and Mary Chain gang.
Live and studio tracks are intermingled here and it’s not immediately apparent which is which – a testament to the wiry live power Freeheat were generating on that particular night in Amsterdam.
It’s not like there’s ever going to be a ‘proper’ Freeheat album, with the various band members scattered (Lurie’s back in Australia), so give thanks to the firey god of feedback that Planting Seeds Records had the wit to ensure these songs were snagged and tagged before they zipped off into the stratosphere for good.

Concerning Freeheat, their debut came in the year 2000 when they released the EP, Don’t Worry Be Happy.
Sure, Freeheat is more accessible than The Jesus and Mary Chain but I don’t see “Down” hitting any major radio stations besides those of college alternative radio stations.

Review of Freeheat / The Parkinsons The Mean Fiddler, 29th November 2001
It's a dreary slow-starter of a November night, the LA2, or the Mean Fiddler as we're now supposed to call it, is as sparsely populated as I've ever seen it, people lurking in shadowy corners, or slumped in the stale- smelling leather seats of the booths.
So Freeheat consist of the aforementioned ex-JAMCs on vocals and guitars with Nick Sanderson once of Earl Brutus (run for the hills!) on drums plus Romi Mori ex-Gun Club on bass and also the only member keeping up old traditions by wearing leather trousers (red ones, mind).
The whole point of Freeheat is apparently to `get back to basics' playing good old fashioned rock and roll with no fiddly technology or fancy stuff, and to this end they've succeeded.

Freeheat as a band existed between 2000 and 2003.
And as a fan I was left with the notion that all I would have to remember the band were 5 songs recorded cheaply and a draw full of self recorded bootlegs from a less than reliable mini disc player.

Freeheat manage to sound very similar to the Mary Chain of the 80's and 90's not surprising since the band is half of the original line up.
Freeheat on the other hand have managed to maintain the underground allure of JAMC and the Gun Club.

Indie Rock - Back on the Water Freeheat / CD / 2006
The dissolution of the Jesus and Mary Chain didn't mean an end to music-making for the Reid brothers, though Jim Reid and fellow JAMC refugee Ben Lurie found themselves unable to release a full album during the existence of their subsequent band, Freeheat.
Appearing at the same time as the JAMC reissues in the middle of 2006, Back on the Water is therefore simultaneously new and retrospective, a catch-all of various studio EP tracks recorded in 1997 and live songs taken from a date at Amsterdam's legendary Paradiso venue in 2003.
The differences between Freeheat and its more famous forebear are, unsurprisingly, pretty minimal -- whatever differences caused the Reids' split, they don't appear to have been musical (song titles like "Dead End Kids" and "Down" further make the point).

The disappointment lies in the fact that the studio tracks were all recorded back in 1997, while the remainder of songs were recorded live back in 2003… so this is not necessarily new music, but it is good music.
This Freeheat music is all good news, and great listening, but the even better news is that there will be a domestic release this March of a record from Sister Vanilla, which is rumored to be a project of both the Reid brothers.
I don't know why the brothers don't just get the Mary Chain back together instead of renaming… this individual magic is excellent, but together, the boys are un-fucking-stoppable.

Enough time has elapsed since the demise of the notoriously cranky and argumentative Madness that one of the group's central brothers, Jim Reid, can make a return, in full confidence he's alienated his entire old audience.
A new generation of heads are waiting to be experimented on with the kind of dissonance, noise, and melody Freeheat bring to rock'n'roll.
No longer studiedly cool, and less likely to antagonise an audience than ever before, Reid, Ben Lurie, Romi Mori and Nick Sanderson turn their semi-supergroup into a vehicle for songs still too abstract and jagged at the edges to elicit an immediate, salivating, Pavlovian response.

Freeheat: Don’t Worry, Be Happy EP Aversion.com Review
With Freeheat’s fairly conspicuous roots—it features the Jesus and Mary Chain’s Jim Reid and Ben Lurie as well as former Gun Clubbers Romi Mori and Nick Sanderson—it’d be pretty easy to think that Freeheat would, by matter of genealogy alone, be able to whittle out a more than respectable album.
While Freeheat packs some of the old tricks of the Jesus and Mary Chain, it’s a far cry from the bands that helped shape indie rock in the ‘80s and early ‘90s.
The sense of adventure that the Gun Club steeped its dark psychobilly in is gone, as is the Jesus and Mary Chain’s worship of ‘60s pop.
