FREEJACK is one of those fantastic concept movies that has everything going for it, yet fails miserably on just about every level.
At the time of FREEJACK's theatrical release, Anthony Hopkins was riding a wave of critical praise from his performance in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, for which he would be honored with an Academy Award only a few months later.
With FREEJACK though, the filmmakers couldn't rely on that as their intent was high gloss from the start.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Freejack | Deseret Morning News Web edition
"Freejack" is all over the map, a chase picture that steals liberally from dozens of other sci-fi epics - from "Frankenstein" to "Terminator 2" - and is kept afloat purely by non-stop motion.
Soon, he discovers he's a "Freejack," someone plucked from the past just before the moment of death so a futuristic person can transfer his mind into a fresh body.
"Freejack" is rated R for considerable mayhem, along with some profanity, vulgarity, brief nudity and sex.

‘Freejack’ (R)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Everything in "Freejack," the paltry new futuristic body-snatching movie starring Estevez and Mick Jagger, has that same strictly-from-poverty quality.
Directed by Geoff Murphy, the picture is a cheesy fantasy set in the year 2009 when, for a price, the rich can achieve immortality by stealing bodies from the past to replace their own defective carcasses.
"Freejack" is rated R for violence and language.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- FREEJACK
FREEJACK is preposterous science fiction at its best; wholly unbelievable, yet thoroughly entertaining for some of the talent it brings to the table.
FREEJACK also stars Rene Russo as Julie Redlund, Alex’s girlfriend who watched him die, and the woman he tries to make a new connection eighteen years after the fact.
FREEJACK is presented in its proper 2.35:1 theatrical aspect ratio and the DVD has been enhanced for playback on 16:9 displays.

I recently rented Freejack after considering watching it many, many times and passing it over and I must say, as a fan of bad Sci-Fi, I was in awe.
Freejack is a term for a person, who in the futuristic world of 2009, (Don't laugh, we're almost there folks.) is ripped from his own time seconds before his untimely death to be used as a vessel for some old codger with lots of money to achieve immortality.
Estevez plays the Freejack, Hopkins the codger and Jagger the Syntec (Freejacker) who brings him into the future, loses him and spends the rest of the movie hilariously trying to bring him in.

 Freejack (1992)
It's basically a mindless actioner with plot devices that are so childish in execution that you have to wonder if Ronald Shussett and Steven Pressfield didn't hand the writing assignments to their school-age children or grandchildren at some points of the story.
They are generally placed right in the middle of the picture, or as close thereto as to completely obscure the lip movements of whomever is speaking, which makes them more distracting than helpful.
The only difference is that the Region 1 disc is packaged in a snapper case, making ours the version of choice, although it would have been nice to see a PAL formatted disc.

from Rolla, MO "Freejack" has one of the more unique twists on time travel, with people of the present being snatched away from a certain death to the future.
It also begins to develop a unique feel and look to it.
"Freejack" has largely been forgotten, but it's still worth a look.

 Freejack DVD reviw
In the year 2009, the very wealthy can have their consciousness held electronically in stasis for a limited amount of time while a suitable candidate is snatched from the past at the moment of their accidental death and recovered for the eventual transmission of the wealthy consciousness into the new body as a vehicle.
Thus, Furlong is a "Freejack" or property whose value lies in the health his body has retained from the past while a ruthless "bonejacker" (Jagger) pursues him relentlessly to collect the bounty worth millions to him for the waiting consciousness of Hopkins's character.
I guess the best way to approach "Freejack" is to take it light as a "popcorn film" and maybe borrow the book from the library if one is interested to see how different the two mediums are from each other.

 DVD Review: Freejack
It's an interesting story with some decent effects(well, for a 1992 movie they're decent), but the screenplay is full of so many weak one-liners and the acting is so mediocre that the film gets dragged down with it.
The anamorphic transfer is letterboxed at 2.35:1, and is free of all but a couple of very minor problems.
The movie has sort of become a "cult" film, and if you're part of that group who enjoys it, you'll be very pleased with Warner's effort.

The film starts out in the present and then blasts off into a depressing future (is Star Trek the only film that shows a future not infested by scruffy, disease-ridden, rat-eating hoboes?) where healthy accident victims from the past are hijacked into the future for use by unscrupulous industrialists.
These wealthy people can achieve a sort of immortality by wiping clean the minds of their victims (called a Freejack) and replacing them electronically with their own minds.
Science fiction fans may remember this type of plot from another film called ``Millenium,'' but ``Freejack'' is a superior film (that's not saying much).

Enter technology again, with the ability to go back in time and snatch healthy people in the past from the brink of accidental death, lobotomize them, and present the bodies to their new owners.
Alex (Estevez) is supposed to be one of these snatchees, but the lobotomy doesn't work, and he escapes to become a "Freejack," a body that doesn't, legally, belong to the person who inhabits it.

A favored kicking toy of critics everywhere, Freejack certainly has its share of faults, not the least of which include unlikely character relationships and a plot which can best be described as just a tad absurd.
If one isn’t already a fan of the dystopian future subgenre of science fiction, then this flick probably isn’t for you, but for established fans, one could do a hell of a lot worse, and hey, at least it’s background noise.
They get these bodies by taking people out of the past who are milliseconds from a sure death anyway and saving them, after a fashion, but only long enough from them to become receptacles for these older dying guys’ minds.
