Freelancer (computer game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freelancer is a space simulation computer game developed by Digital Anvil and published by Microsoft in March 2003 for Microsoft Windows.
Many people have noted similarities between Freelancer and a much older game, Elite, which was available for the BBC microcomputer in the early 1980s, as well as its two sequels, Fronter: Elite II and Frontier: First Encounters (particularly the bulletin boards at each base where the player can find jobs to carry out).
Freelancer supports a thriving modding community, mainly due to the fact that almost all of the architecture of the in-game universe (solar systems, economy, factions, etc.) is contained within editable.INI files.

Freelancer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A freelancer or freelance worker is a self-employed person working in a profession or trade in which full-time employment is also common.
Fields where freelancing is especially common include journalism and other forms of writing, computer programming and graphic design, consulting, and many other professional and creative services.
But the practice is widespread: for example, bounty hunters and mercenaries are freelancers, with their full-time counterparts being, respectively, the police and the military.

 DailyGame Reviewers Choice: Freelancer [PC]
Freelancer will change your mind about how exciting an open-ended game can be, and it will distort your perception of the genre in so many wonderful ways that you’ll ponder why you ever bothered to play any other.
Whether by the game’s slight weakness in the "land-based" activities or by your own choice, you’ll probably spend most of your gameplay time in space, so it’s a good thing that the ships, stars, asteroid clusters, bases and cosmic clouds are all illustrated with the utmost attention to detail.
Freelancer is the best space-based game since X-Wing, its gameplay is just as innovative, and it’s the most complete PC game of any genre that I’ve played in a couple of years.

 AtomicGamer - Freelancer Review
Generally, these games have hit and miss sales, and they do not always correlate with how good the game is. At least with the case of Freelancer, though, the game may or may not sell well but there is some quality work in there.
Freelancer doesn't really do much in the line of epic space battles where dozens of ships duke it out - the scope of the game is a little more personal most of the time.
The game includes a large number of cutscenes, most of which involve your character talking about whatever is going on in the story with the people who are giving him the missions.

Rise of Nations Interview: Doug Kaufman, Designer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
I find computer games to be much more "of a piece;" that is, the design has to be more cohesive.
Yes, you can tweak systems, but the repercussions are more grand than with a board game, and that's one reason why the design of a computer game can easily take two years where the design of a boardgame typically takes 6 months.
Most computer games are single-player experiences, or need to have excellent single-player modes, and this of course informs all sorts of different design concepts.

Freelancer takes place in a universe where the societal structure encompasses four major "houses", the North American Liberty, the Asian Kusari, British Bretonia and Germanic Rheinland.
Freelancer is an action game at heart, far more classic space opera than hardcore science fiction or space sim, with a light smattering of role-playing elements.

 RPGnet: Review of Freelancer
Freelancer, released in March of 2003 by Microsoft and Digital Anvil, is one of the most beautiful space-fighter-jockey games to come along.
Since it seems that joystick games are becoming fewer and farther between, Digital Anvil skipped the usual translation of joystick-to-mouse control that has been problematic for some games in the past; instead, Freelancer has been designed to fly-by-mouse right from the ground up.
Flying your fighter and blasting bad guys is the highlight of the game, which is a good thing, because the rest of the game has some adequacy issues.

"Freelancer"/ a game review from Christian Spotlight
Freelancer is by far, one of the greatest games of 2003.
Although a few minor problems keep this game from being one of the top games of all times, it is certainly worth picking up.
Also if you have a Radeon graphics card, there is a bug which slows down the game to a crawl when text is displayed (there is a fix involving mucking around with some settings every time you want to play).

 Freelancer Review - Groovalicious Games
While this space combat/exploration/trading game may not offer a huge variety of missions or gameplay, overall it's very enjoyable and rather addictive, and is easily my favorite release of early 2003.
Freelancer's single player campaign is put together well, propelled along by an interesting story and some solid cinematics, featuring movie-like action such as hairbreadth escapes and heroic sacrifices.
As I mentioned in my Game Awards, Freelancer was one of the games I was most looking forward to this year, and as the first of my "Big Six" games to be released, not only does it not disappoint, but it sets a standard of enjoyment that hopefully the other titles will reach.

The game does have a few minor problems, primarily in the sound department, that tends to stifle an otherwise enjoyable gaming experience.
